THE CALLING OF A WATCHMAN

The word “watchmen” is translated from the Hebrew word shamar or shomer. It appears 468 times in the Scripture and is translated “watchman” eight times. Other alternate translations are keep, guard, guardian, keeper, watch, observe, heed, or preserve.

“On Your Walls O Jerusalem I Have Appointed Watchmen; All Day And All Night they Will Never Keep Silent. You Who Remind the Lord Take No Rest For Yourselves.” (Isaiah 62:8).

It was Isaiah who first prophesied that God would raise up watchmen concerning the forthcoming events in the history of the Hebrews. As the events prophetically predicted by Isaiah unfold, we indeed see God calling the Prophet Ezekiel as the most prominent watchman in the scriptural usage of the word “watchman” (Ezekiel 3:17, 33:7), and it is Ezekiel that biblically best demonstrates what a watchman is and what he does.

Watchmen were critical for many reasons. In the Bible, watchmen would pray for repentance in the city (Ezekiel 18:30-32). They were called to wake up the city from its apostasy (Hosea 8:1) and turn from destruction (Amos 3:6). Praying watchmen provided protection from invasion (Jeremiah 4:5) and reported any sign of danger approaching the city (II Samuel 18:24-27).

THE BIBLICAL WATCHMAN, EZEKIEL

In Ezekiel 3:17-21, the underlying spiritual aspect of the watchman is emphasized. In Ezekiel 33: 2-9, the watchman warns of a physical threat.

Ezekiel 3:17-21

17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: 18 When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. 20 “Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die; because you did not give him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 Nevertheless if you warn the righteous man that the righteous should not sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; also you will have delivered your soul.” 17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.”

Ezekiel 33:2-9

2 “Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their watchman, 3 when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4 then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’ 7 “So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me. 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. 9 Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.”

According to Finis Jennings Dake, a watchman is one who looks out or sees from a height, with the view to warning of impending danger or to give any information, good or bad. The Lord often called priests and prophets to be a watchman. The duties of the watchmen were threefold: to wait and watch for what God would command and give in warning, to watch over the people, and to warn the people for God. Ezekiel’s prophetic calling was a great weight. Because the responsibility of warning the wicked sinner and the fallen righteous is not to be taken lightly.

Notice that Ezekiel is primarily concerned with fulfilling his responsibility before God. His primary concern is not whether people take heed, panic or fall back into apathetic slumber, but that he has fulfilled his duty to warn them. Their response remains their own responsibility.

CHRISTIANS ARE TO BE WATCHMEN IN THE END TIMES

With the continual threat of division, darkness, and terrorism presently in the world, watchmen are critical to warn others of the coming of the seven years of tribulation. In fact, it is felt to be a mandate from the throne of God! Any Christian who has a heart for God and a heart for others, and who is willing to humble themselves before God with a pure heart is encouraged to pray about being a part of this call.

Jesus said the End Times would be even crueler and more violent than the time He walked the Earth. He said, “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.” (Matthew 24:37) And what characterized the times of Noah? We read in Genesis 6, “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.”[8] and “The earth also was corrupt before God, and the Earth was filled with violence.”[9]

The role of the watchman is described in scripture in both the Old- and New Testaments. In a key parable, Jesus shows how a Christian may be commissioned by Christ as a dedicated watchmen, while at the same time Christ emphasizes that every believer is to have the attitude of a watchman.

The context of Jesus’ parable in Mark 13 shows there are signs of perilous times related to the close of this age. As we see many of these signs all around us today, we understand the rapture of the Church may be close at hand, though we are shown in scripture not to be “date setters” trying to predict the exact day. Contemporary evangelical pastors, such as Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, are increasingly recognizing the importance of being informed of current events and see the need for taking a stand in society. Hibbs is a regular speaker at the Watchmen on the Wall conferences in Washington, D.C. where critical issues are raised, while at the same time there is a reassurance of our encouragement and hope in Christ and in His coming.

In Jesus’ parable of watchmen in Mark 13, the main event is the anticipated return of the “the Son of Man”, a term Jesus used to describe Himself: “For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.”[1] The King James Version of the Bible uses the word porter to describe this watchman. In some translations, this watchman is called a doorkeeper(NASB) or a gatekeeper(NLT). In one form or another, the porter serves three parties: the master of the house, the inhabitants of the house and the guests who come to visit the house.

In Jesus’ time, the Romans occupied Israel and the main threat to the Jews and the early Church was not an invading army. Information of critical news came by way of word-of-mouth and the door keepers, and those who sat at the gates of the city would be in the know. Today, threats to the community are ascertained instantly by way of the Internet and radio. Christians who consistently review news and events are serving as modern-day watchmen. Because Christians emphasize truth and integrity and are often willing to stand for truth courageously, many non-Christians are interested in the news Christians have to share.

Though the doorkeeper has the main responsibility to watch in the parable, Jesus emphasizes in the conclusion of the parable that all Christians are to have the attitude of watchmen in the End Times, especially as we await an important main event, Christ’s return to rapture the Church: “And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”

PRECONCEPTIONS ARE HARD TO OVERCOME

Noah warned the people of a great disastrous flood while people had never even seen rain before. Most people were apathetic. This condition is called the “normalcy bias” and was a reason why so many Jews refused to leave Germany before being killed. When you go against the grain to warn people, most people will be apathetic, some will appreciate it, and others may even become angry. We see all three of these reactions when we warn people. Some Christians believe the Church is supposed to “feed the sheep” and that’s it. But if all we do is feed the sheep and don’t warn them of danger, all we’re really doing is just fattening them up for the kill. We shouldn’t be dogmatic in assuming our role and responsibility before God is the same as another person. Christian attitudes towards End Times prophecy range from disdain to obsession, but there is a healthy medium to be found.

To be a watchman today requires overcoming some serious obstacles, such as the mind-numbing effects of mainstream media and the dumbed-down public education system. Psychologists have also labeled a certain kind of mental inertia and coined “the normalcy bias” that describes people who believe nothing really dangerous is ever going to happen, no matter what kind of facts you may present.

POSITIVE ENCOURAGEMENT IS IMPORTANT

Though we understand the End Times are a time of heightened trials, there are scriptures that emphasize we are to encourage one another with the blessed hope of the rapture of the Church and our ultimate unity with Christ.

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18)

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” (John 14:1-3)

PRESENTLY, THERE’S A GROWING MOVEMENT

In addition to the blogs and websites sprouting up with a watchmen theme, there are organizations, such as “Watchmen on the Wall” that focus on equipping pastors to be watchmen in their communities. The mission statement of Watchmen on the Wall states:

“Watch what is going on in the culture. Pray for the wisdom to engage biblically, courageously, and winsomely. Sound the Alarm from the pulpit. Take a bold stand with others to defend and advance faith, family, and freedom.”

Conclusion

As Christians, we are all called to be watchmen in attitude, if not in service in these End Times, according to the teachings of Jesus. We should be careful of criticizing believers who have been called by God to focus on research regarding critical information and warning others. There is no sense in living ignorantly. And the desire to stand for truth and to be “valiant for the truth” (Jeremiah 9:3b) still finds common ground among many people of diverse backgrounds.

WHY BIBLE PROPHECY IS IMPORTANT

Bible prophecy is one of the most ignored topics in churches today and pastors avoid it like a plague. They usually assert that it is either too controversial or too difficult to understand. Some even claim it has no relevance to Christian’s living today. The result is that almost one-fourth of God’s Word has been put on the shelf, and the average Christian ends up living with no anticipation or even yearning for the Lords’ soon return.

There are two areas of God’s Word that have been terribly ignored and abused in the history of the Church. They are the opening and the conclusion of the Bible — the books of Genesis and Revelation. They spiritualize the Bible by claiming that it doesn’t really mean what it says. But, the abuses of Bible prophecy apply to more than just the book of Revelation. It applies to all of God’s prophetic word, and that is a shame, because the study of Bible prophecy is very important for many reasons.

There are eight key reasons why all Christians should be interested in studying God’s Prophetic Word. This should be done without adding to or taking away from it (Revelation 22:18-19).

1. QUANTITY

As mentioned, approximately one-fourth of the Bible is prophetic in nature. In the Old Testament, you have the major prophecy books like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel and all the Minor Prophets. Plus, you have the Psalms. Many of the Psalms are also prophetic in nature.

Then in the New Testament and you have entire books like 1 and 2 Thessalonians, the book of Revelation, and huge passages like Matthew 24 and Luke 21.

What we are told in 2 Timothy 3 is that all Scripture, including prophecy, is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness that the man of God may be adequate equipped for every good work. Don’t take one-fourth to one-third of God’s Word and put it on the shelf. Study it. It will bless you (Revelation 1:3 and 22:14)..

2. UNIQUENESS

Fulfilled prophecy is a unique characteristic of the Bible. There is no other religion or book in the world that contains fulfilled prophecies. Did you know for example there’s not one fulfilled prophecy in any of the sayings of Confucius or Buddha? There is not one fulfilled prophecy in the Koran, the Hindu Vedras or in the book of Mormon. Only the Bible contains fulfilled prophecy.

Isaiah 41:22-23 challenges other religions and their gods, “‘Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come. Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.”

3. VALIDATES SCRIPTURE

Scripture. Prophecy attests to the supernatural origin of the Bible. Prophecy proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Bible is God’s revelation to man.

In Isaiah 13, as an example, he prophesied that Babylon will fall to the Medes and the Persians. When Isaiah wrote this prophecy, Babylon wasn’t even a world empire. The world empire was the Assyrians. Or, consider Micah 3:12 where it was prophesied that Jerusalem would become a heap of ruins and that the Temple Mount would be plowed. That was written 100 years before Jerusalem was destroyed and the Temple Mount was plowed by the Babylonians.

Jesus also was a prophet. It was 40 years later in 70 AD that Jerusalem and the Temple fell, just as Jesus prophesied.

There are many prophesies about the return of the Jews to their land and after approximately 2000 years, Israel became a nation again on 14 May 1948.

4. VALIDATES JESUS

Bible prophecy validates Jesus as who He said He was, that He was God in the flesh.
Look, for example, at Micah 5:2. This is probably one of the best known prophecies about the First Coming of the Messiah. It says that the Messiah will be born in the town of Bethlehem. This was written 500 years before Jesus was born.

Psalm 22 is about the Crucifixion. Verse 16 says the Messiah will die by having His hands and His feet pierced. That was written 1,000 years before Jesus Or, look at the book of Zechariah.

There are approximately 330 prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures concerning the First Coming of the Messiah, but if you take out all the repetitive prophecies, it leaves you with 109 separate and distinct prophecies.

5. TOOL FOR EVANGELISM

Bible prophecy is a tremendous tool of evangelism. The very first Gospel sermon ever preached is found in Acts 2, where Peter preaches. All he did in that sermon was saying, “The prophets said the Messiah would do this.” That is all Peter’s sermon is — one prophecy after another. Suddenly the people interrupted him and asked, “What must we do to be saved?” They were convicted by the teaching of Bible prophecy and him showing them that Jesus had fulfilled prophecy.

Or, consider Philip and the Eunuch. Philip is given a horizontal rapture. He is taken over to another road. He sees this Ethiopian eunuch coming down the road reading a big scroll. He stops and they start talking. The Eunuch asks, “What is this scroll?” He quotes from it. What’s the passage? It’s Isaiah 53. Philip asks, “Do you understand it?” The Eunuch replies, “I don’t understand it.” Philip said, “Let me explain it.” He explains how Yeshua (Jesus) was the fulfillment of Isaiah 53. The man is baptized and then goes on his way rejoicing.

6. STIMULUS FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Prophecy is a great stimulus for spiritual growth in two areas. First, Bible prophecy provides hope. The average Christian has very little hope. In terms of trying to define hope, just ask the average Christian, “What is your hope?” And they’ll say, “My hope is to go to Heaven.” You then ask, “Okay, what is Heaven?” Suddenly they become very inarticulate. Are you going to have a body? Going to have a name? Going to be recognizable? Are you going to eat? You going to work? You going to create things? Where are you going to be? Are you going to be on a cloud playing a harp? Are you going to be on the ground? Are you going to be in the New Jerusalem in the ground, or the New Jerusalem out in space? Thhe Bible answers every one of these questions asked.

The more you know about Bible prophecy the greater your hope will be. Promise after promise after promise after promise is made to us as overcomers, and we need to know those promises and live in the hope and expectation of those promises.

Second, Bible prophecy motivates holiness. Almost every passage in the New Testament that talks about prophecy says, for example in 1 John, to focus your life upon the return of Jesus Christ. Think about the return of Jesus Christ, because as you think about the return of Jesus Christ you will purify yourselves.

7. UNDERSTANDING OF CURRENT EVENTS

Bible prophecy provides an understanding of current events. There is no way you can understand why there is so much decay in society today unless you know what the Bible says about that. Jesus prophesied that before He returns, it would be as in the days of Noah. We are seeing that happening before our very eyes.

Consider this apostasy in the Church. Who would ever dream just 20 years ago that we would live in an age when denominations would be endorsing homosexuals as bishops of their churches, and even advocating marriage between homosexuals? Some self-proclaimed Christians now even question the virgin birth, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Christ. Just think about the Emergent Church Movement who are just taking the Word of God and throwing it out claiming, “There’s not really any truth. We just have got to be touchy-feely about doctrine. We mustn’t be judgmental. We mustn’t be intolerant.” Truth is going out the window! Paul said it would be a perilous time, where many would have a form of godliness but would reject the power thereof.

There is no way you could even begin to understand what is going on the Middle East today unless you know something about the history of Israel from the Word of God and His promises to Israel. The fact that Israel has an everlasting covenant for that land God has never taken it away. The deed to that land belongs to them. You can’t begin to understand all the conflict that is going on there today unless you get into Bible prophecy.

8. REVEALS THE SEASON OF THE LORD’S RETURN

Finally we need to study Bible prophecy because it reveals the season of the Lord’s return. Nobody can know the date or the hour, but beyond a shadow of a doubt we can know the season.

1 Thessalonians 5 says. “Now as to the signs and the seasons, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you for you yourselves know full well that the Day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.” Unfortunately, most pastors and self-proclaimed Christians stop there. If you read on, it says, “But you, brethren, you believers, are not in darkness that the day should overtake you like a thief. For you are sons of light, and sons of day. We are not of night or darkness, so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.” Because we have the Holy Spirit residing inside of us, we can understand things from the Word of God that others cannot understand, like the season we are living in. For those who know Bible prophecy, He is not coming like a thief in the night.

Look at Hebrew 10:25: “Do not forsake the assembling together as is the habit of some. But encourage one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” It is the Day of Judgment. In verse 27 it is saying that there is something we can see. There is something that can be perceived, and of course those are the signs of the times.

Or, consider what Jesus said in Matthew 24:33, “Even so, when you see all these things…recognize that He’s near right at the door.”

“WE GAVE YOU THE BIBLE!”

Most Christians cross lines with at least one Roman Catholic in their lifetime. If you dare to challenge them on any of their traditions, rituals or doctrines, you can almost be sure that they will confront you with the argument, “WE GAVE YOU THE BIBLE.”

THE BLASPHEMOUS ROMAN CATHOLIC CLAIM

(Based on “Did the catholic church give us the bible?” – Bible.ca)

Catholics contend that the whole world is indebted to the Roman Catholic church for the existence of the Bible. This is another of their attempts to exalt the church as an authority in addition to the Bible.

“If she had not scrutinized carefully the writings of her children, rejecting some and approving others as worthy of inclusion in the canon of the New Testament, there would be no New Testament today.”
“If she had not declared the books composing the New Testament to be inspired word of God, we would not know it.”
“The only authority which non-Catholics have for the inspiration of the Scriptures is the authority of the Catholic Church.” (The Faith of Millions, p. 145)
“It is only by the divine authority of the Catholic Church that Christians know that the scripture is the word of God, and what books certainly belong to the Bible.” (The Question Box, p. 46)
“It was the Catholic Church and no other which selected and listed the inspired books of both the Old Testament and the New Testament…If you can accept the Bible or any part of it as inspired Word of God, you can do so only because the Catholic Church says it is.” (The Bible is a Catholic Book, p. 4).

WHY NOT PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH (IN THE BIBLE “YOU GAVE US”):

If the Bible is a Catholic book, why does it nowhere mention the Catholic Church? Why is there no mention of a pope, a cardinal, an archbishop, a parish priest, a nun, or a member of any other Catholic order? If the Bible is a Catholic book, why is auricular confession, indulgences, prayers to the saints, adoration of Mary, veneration of relics and images, and many other rites and ceremonies of the Catholic Church, left out of it?

If the Bible is a Catholic book, how can Catholics account for the passage, “A bishop then, must be blameless, married but once, reserved, prudent, of good conduct, hospitable, a teacher…He should rule well his own household, keeping his children under control and perfectly respectful. For if a man cannot rule his own household, how is he to take care of the church of God?” (1 Tim. 3:2, 4-5). The Catholic Church does not allow a bishop to marry, while the Bible says, “he must be married.” Furthermore, if the Bible is a Catholic book, why did they write the Bible as it is, and feel the necessity of putting footnotes at the bottom of the page in effort to keep their subject from believing what is in the text?

The following list give a examples of what we have been trying to emphasize. If the Bible is a Catholic book,

1. Why does it condemn clerical dress? (Matt. 23:5-6).
2. Why does it teach against the adoration of Mary? (Luke 11:27-28).
3. Why does it show that all Christians are priests? (1 Pet. 2:5,9).
4. Why does it condemn the observance of special days? (Gal. 4:9-11).
5. Why does it teach that all Christians are saints? (1 Cor. 1:2).
6. Why does it condemn the making and adoration of images? (Ex. 20:4-5).
7. Why does it teach that baptism is immersion instead of pouring? (Col. 2:12).
8. Why does it forbid us to address religious leaders as “father”? (Matt. 23:9).
9. Why does it teach that Christ is the only foundation and not the apostle Peter? (1 Cor. 3:11).
10. Why does it teach that there is one mediator instead of many? (1 Tim. 2:5).
11. Why does it teach that a bishop must be a married man? (1 Tim. 3:2, 4-5).
12. Why is it opposed to the primacy of Peter? (Luke 22:24-27).
13. Why does it oppose the idea of purgatory? (Luke 16:26).
14. Why is it completely silent about infant baptism, instrumental music in worship, indulgences, confession to priests, the rosary, the mass, and many other things in the Catholic Church?

DO CATHOLICS CONSIDER THE BIBLE AS THE FINAL AUTHORITY?

(Ref. Final Authority and Tradition – Biblebc.com)

If Catholics gave us the Bible, then why did they do “half a job” by not including everything that, according to them, were inspired by God? When it comes to final authority, the Roman Catholic church teaches that three authorities exist. The 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church declares:

“It is clear therefore that, in the supremely wise arrangement of God, sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, and the Magisterium of the Church are so connected and associated that one of them cannot stand without the others. Working together, each in its own way, under the action of the one Holy Spirit, they all contribute effectively to the salvation of souls.” (Pg. 34, #95)

So here we see, that along with Scripture, “tradition” (teachings handed down throughout the ages), and “magisterium” (the task of giving an authentic interpretation of the word of God) are associated so that one of them cannot stand without the others. In other words, “tradition” and “magisterium” are on equal grounds with the Scriptures. This is enforced by:

“Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit. And (Holy) Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit.” (Pg. 31, #81)

And should these authorities disagree with each other the Catechism states:

“The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living, teaching office of the Church alone. This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.” (Pg. 32, #85)

Thus, the final authority being the Roman Catholic Church! This too, is stated in the Catechism:

“For, of course, all that has been said about the manner of interpreting Scripture is ultimately subject to the judgment of the Church which exercises the divinely conferred commission and ministry of watching over and interpreting the Word of God.” (Pg. 39, #119)

In other words, according to Catholics the Scriptures are not sufficient in itself. Nowhere do we see that the Scriptures were given only to an elite group to explain it to others.

Although God never changes, Catholics kept on adding to their list of evil traditions. The following refer to the time each practices were either A) first introduced, B) formulated, C) adopted by council, or D) proclaimed by a pope:

GOD INSPIRED THE BIBLE

As reborn Christians, we should know that the Catholic claim is a lie, as God Himself inspired every message in the Bible.

Paul describes the process of inspiration by the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 2:9-13: “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: …Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” (KJV)

He also refers to the Hebrew Scriptures as the “word of God,” not of men, in 1 Thessalonians 2:13: “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” (KJV)

2 Timothy 3:16 says: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (KJV).
In the original Greek, it is stated that all of the Scriptures are “theopneustos” — “breathed out by God.”

In 2 Peter 1:20-21 we read: “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (KJV)”

THE ROLE OF MEN IN WRITING THE BIBLE

(Ref. “How did the people who wrote the bible know what to say?” – Christianity.net.au)

In one sense, the answer is simple: they were inspired to wrote down some of the things that they experienced. For example, Luke says that since he had ‘carefully investigated everything’, he wrote down ‘an orderly account’ (Luke 1:3). In most cases, the writers were eyewitnesses who “supernaturally” knew that what they had seen was so important that it needed to be recorded for others to read. John speaks of himself as one ‘who testifies to everything he saw – that is, the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.’ (Revelation 1:2). Sometimes, they were given a specific message to write down (for example, Deuteronomy 31:19, explains where the words to Deuteronomy 32 came from, or Jeremiah 36), but more commonly they used their own words, but not their own messages.

But Christians believe that in all cases, God carefully ensured that what these people wrote down was exactly what he wanted. ‘For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit’ (2 Peter 1:21). The writers of the Bible often referred back to older books within it as being God’s words – and most importantly, Jesus himself described the Bible in this way. In fact, he described it as God’s word to his hearers (for example, in Matthew 22:31-32, which quotes Exodus 3:6).

Obviously, even the most brilliant poet or novelist cannot hope to write something that will affect readers for millennia, yet the Bible has done and continues to do so. We recognise it as inspired, because God worked, often behind the scenes (subconsciously, if you like) to ensure that the words we have in the Bible are his powerful, life-bringing words.

Catholics often boast that the Bible was written by Catholics, e.g., “All the books of the New Testament were written by Catholics.” (The Bible is a Catholic Book, p. 14). When we consider the word “catholic” as meaning “universal,” we readily admit that the writers were “catholic” in that sense; they were members of the church universal–the church of Christ which is described in the New Testament Scriptures (Col. 1:18; Rom. 16:16). However, we firmly deny that the writers of the New Testament were members of the Roman Catholic Church as we know it today. The Roman Catholic Church was not fully developed until several hundred years after the New Testament was written. It is not the same institution as disclosed in the New Testament. The New Testament books were written by members of the Lord’s church, but they are not its author. God Himself is the author of the New Testament.

AN IN-DEPTH LOOK INTO THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CLAIM

(Based on “Did the catholic church give us the bible?” – Bible.ca)

It would seem unnecessary for the Catholic Church to make the boastful claim of giving the Bible to the world when both it and Protestantism accept the Bible as a revelation from God. However, it is an attempt to weaken the Bible as the sole authority and to replace it with their man-made church. If it is true that we can accept the Bible only on the basis of the Catholic Church, doesn’t that make the Catholic Church superior to the Bible? This is exactly what they want men to believe. They try to prove the Bible by the church and prove the church by the Bible.

Notice, again, the following from Catholic sources:
“Because it never was a Bible, till the infallible Church pronounced it to be so. The separate treatises, each of them inspired, were lying, as it were dispersedly; easy to confound with others, that were uninspired. The Church gathered them up, selected them, pronounced judgment on them; rejecting some, which she defined and declared not to be canonical, because not inspired; adopting others as being inspired, and therefore canonical.” (What Is the Bible? p. 6).
“And since the books of the Bible constituting both the Old and the New Testament were determined solely by the authority of the Catholic Church, without the Church there would have been no Bible, and hence no Protestantism.” (The Faith of Millions, p. 10).

The Catholic officials above claim that without the Catholic Church there would be no Bible; they argue that mankind can accept the Scriptures only on the basis of the Catholic Church which gathered the books and determined which were inspired. Surely the Catholic Church cannot claim that it gave us the Old Testament Scriptures.

The Old Testament:

The Old Testament came through the Jews (God’s chosen people of old) who had the holy oracles entrusted to them. Paul said, “What advantage then remains to the Jew, or what is the use of circumcision? Much in every respect. First, indeed, because the oracles of God were entrusted to them.” (Rom. 3:1-2; see also Rom. 9:4-5; Acts 7:38).

The Old Testament books were gathered into one volume and were translated from Hebrew into Greek long before Christ came to earth. The Septuagint Version was translated by seventy scholars at Alexandria, Egypt around the year 227 B.C., and this was the version Christ and His apostles used. Christ did not tell the people, as Catholics do today, that they could accept the Scriptures only on the basis of the authority of those who gathered them and declared them to be inspired. He urged the people of His day to follow the Old Testament Scriptures as the infallible guide, not because man or any group of men has sanctioned them as such, but because they came from God. Furthermore, He understood that God-fearing men and women would be able to discern by evidence (external and internal) which books were of God and which were not; thus, He never raised questions and doubts concerning the gathering of the inspired books.

The new testament and the council of hippo:

These quotes are from Catholic regarding the Council of Hippo:
“… in A.D. 390, at the Council of Hippo, the Catholic Church gathered together the various books which claimed to be scripture, passed on the merits and claims of each and this council decided which were inspired and which were not. The Catholic Church put all the inspired books and epistles together in one volume and THAT is the Bible as we have it today. The Catholic Church therefore gave to the people and the World, the Bible as we have it today.” (From a magazine advertisement published by the Knights of Columbus bearing the title, “Who Gave the Bible to the People?”)
“It was not until the Council of Hippo in 390 that the Church gathered these gospels and epistles, scattered about in different churches, and placed them within the covers of a single book, giving the Bible to the world.” (The Faith of Millions, p. 152).
“Indeed, when you accept the Bible as the Word of God, you are obliged to receive it on the authority of the Catholic Church, who was the sole Guardian of the Scriptures for fifteen hundred years.” (The Faith of Our Fathers, p. 68).
“When were all these writings put together? The Catholic Church put all of them in one book between the years 350 and 405.” (A Catechism for Adults, p. 10).

Thus, Catholics argue that since the Council of Hippo in 390 A.D. proclaimed which books were actually inspired and placed them in one volume, all are indebted to the Catholic Church for the New Testament and can accept it only on the authority of the Catholic Church. There are several things wrong with this.

First, it cannot be proven that the church which held the Council of Hippo in 390 A.D. was the same church which is now known as the Roman Catholic Church. For example, the church of 390 had no crucifixes and images because, “The first mention of Crucifixes are in the sixth century” and “The whole tradition of veneration holy images gradually and naturally developed” (Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. VII, p. 667). The church of 390 took communion under both kinds because that was the prevailing practice until it was formally abolished in 1416 A.D. (See Lives and Times of the Roman Pontiffs, Vol. I, p. 111). The church of 390 was a church altogether different from the Roman Catholic Church today.

Furthermore, in the proceedings of the Council of Hippo, the bishops did not mention nor give the slightest hint that they were for the first time “officially” cataloging the books of the Bible for the world. It was not until the fourth session of the Council of Trent (1545-1563) that the bishops and high-ranking officials of the Catholic Church “officially” cataloged the books they thought should be included in the Bible and bound them upon the consciences of all Catholics. (See Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent, pp. 17-18).

Secondly, God did not give councils the authority to select His sacred books, nor does He expect men to receive His sacred books only because of councils or on the basis of councils. It takes no vote or sanction of a council to make the books of the Bible authoritative. Men were able to rightly discern which books were inspired before the existence of ecclesiastical councils and men can do so today. A council of men in 390 with no divine authority whatever, supposedly took upon itself the right to state which books were inspired, and Catholics argue, “We can accept the Bible only on the authority of the Catholic Church.” Can we follow such reasoning?

Thirdly, it cannot be proven that the Catholic Church is solely responsible for the gathering and selection of the New Testament books. In fact, it can be shown that the New Testament books were gathered into one volume and were in circulation long before the Catholic Church claims to have taken its action in 390 at the council of Hippo. In the following we list some of the catalogues of the books of the Bible which are given by early Christian writers.

326. Athanasius, bishop at Alexandria, mentions all of the New Testament books.
315-386. Cyril, bishop at Jerusalem, gives a list of all New Testament books except Revelation.
270. Eusebius, bishop at Caesarea, called the Father of ecclesiastical history, gives an account of the persecution of Emperor Diocletian whose edict required that all churches be destroyed and the Scriptures burned. He lists all the books of the New Testament. He was commissioned by Constantine to have transcribed fifty copies of the Bible for use of the churches of Constantinople.
185-254. Origen, born at Alexandria, names all the books of both the Old and New Testaments.
165-220. Clement, of Alexandria, names all the books of the New Testament except Philemon, James, 2 Peter and 3 John. In addition we are told by Eusebius, who had the works of Clement, that he gave explanations and quotations from all the canonical books.
160-240. Turtullian, contemporary of Origen and Clement, mentions all the New Testament books except 2 Peter, James and 2 John.
135-200. Irenaeus, quoted from all New Testament books except Philemon, Jude, James and 3 John.
100-147. Justin Martyr, mentions the Gospels as being four in number and quotes from them and some of the epistles of Paul and Revelation.
Besides the above, the early church fathers have handed down in their writings quotations from all the New Testament books so much so that it is said that the entire New Testament can be reproduced from their writings alone.
Thus, the New Testament books were in existence in their present form at the close of the apostolic age. As a matter of fact, the apostles themselves put their writings into circulation. “And when this letter has been read among you, see that it be read in the church of the Laodiceans also; and that you yourselves read the letter from Laodicea.” (Col. 4:16). “I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.” (1 Thess. 5:27). The holy Scriptures were written for all (1 Cor. 1:2; Eph. 1:1) and all will be judged by them in the last day (Rev. 20:12; John 12:48). Jesus said that His Word will abide forever (Matt. 24:35; 1 Pet. 1:23-25).

Fourthly, the Catholic claim of giving the Bible to the world cannot be true because they have not been the sole possessor of the Bible at any time. Some of the most valuable Greek Bibles and Versions have been handed down to us from non-Roman Catholic sources. A notable example of this is the Codex Sinaiticus which was found in the monastery of St. Catherine (of the Greek Orthodox Church) at Mount Sinai in 1844 and is now in the British Museum. It contains all of the books of the New Testament and all but small portions of the Old Testament. Scholars are certain that this manuscript was made early in the fourth century, not later than 350 A.D. This manuscript found by a German scholar named, Tishendorf, who was a Protestant, and this manuscript which is the most complete of all has never been in the hands of the Roman Catholic Church.

Another valuable manuscript that has never been possessed by the Roman Catholic Church is the Codex Alexandrianus. It, too, is now on exhibit in the manuscript room of the British Museum in London. It was a gift from the Patriarch of Constantinople (of the Greek Orthodox Church) to Charles I in 1628. It had been in possession of the Patriarchs for centuries and originally came from Alexandria, Egypt from which it gets its name. Scholars are certain that this manuscript was also made in the fourth century and, along with the Codex Sinaiticus, is thought to be one of the fifty Greek Bibles commissioned to be copied by Constantine.

CONCLUSIONS

In the light of the foregoing, the boastful claim of the Roman Catholic Church that it has been the sole guardian and preserver of the sacred Scriptures down to the present, is nothing but pure falsehood. The Bible is not a Catholic book. Catholics did not write it, nor does their doctrines and church meet the description of the doctrine and church of which it speaks. The New Testament was completed before the end of the first century, A.D. The things in it do not correspond to the Catholic Church which hundreds of years after the death of the apostles slowly evolved into what it now is. The Catholic Church is not the original and true church, but a “church” born of many departures and corruptions from the New Testament church. Furthermore, even if the Catholic Church could show conclusively that it alone is responsible for gathering the books, it does not prove that the Catholic Church is infallible, nor does it prove that it is the author of the Bible. God has at times used evil agencies to accomplish His purpose (Jer. 27:6-8; 43:10; Hab. 1:5-11; John 11:49-52).

THE ALLEGORICAL DISASTER

THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth” (2Timothy 2:15)

After Jesus rose from the dead, one of His first recorded acts was to interpret Scripture: “And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures” (Luke 24:27). The Greek word translated “explained” in this verse is a form of the verb diermeno from which our English word “hermeneutics” is derived. The failure to interpret Scripture properly is condemned in the New Testament: “… regard the patience of our Lord to be salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction” (2Peter 3:15,16). Peter addresses two problems: being untaught and unstable. It is ironic that in our day many consider ignorance to be bliss when it comes to studying proper hermeneutics.

The basic idea in hermeneutics is that the author’s meaning should control our interpretation. God the Holy Spirit inspired the human writers of Scripture, who used their own languages in their historical setting to convey their meaning. The job of the interpreter is to come to a clear understanding of that meaning. This means, most importantly, that we love the truth and have a heart to learn, even if what we learn is not what we hoped for or expected. When Jesus explained the Scriptures on the road to Emmaus, he told these disciples what they had not hoped for nor expected: that it was necessary for Messiah to suffer (Luke 24:26). Yet, properly interpreted, this is what the Scriptures taught.

The Bible is history’s most published, studied, translated and quoted book, but it is also the most misused and misinterpreted book. Cults and false religions, like those who preach the prosperity gospel, use it to their own benefit. Others simply misinterpret it or choose to blindly hold onto what their church fathers and pastors taught them, without any interest to study the Bible for themselves or a willingness to even consider that what they have been taught, might actually not agree with the true Scriptural meaning. The fact that a given passage is misunderstood, purposely or otherwise, does not demonstrate that the author of the passage had no clear meaning in mind. Nor does it follow that the readers cannot discern this meaning if they are open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In this article I want to expose common errors in unbiblical allegorical interpretations of God’s Word.

THE HISTORICAL BASIS OF CHRISTIANITY

Christianity is especially notable as resting essentially on a historical basis due to the Messianic element in it. Indeed, it can be said to have claimed from the beginning, a fulfilment of history. The apostles in their earliest appeal, demanded that one “search the scriptures.” There is a vast difference, however, between studying history and studying something historically. The fact that the Christians retained the Old Testament is ample evidence. That they failed to deal with it adequately, the New Testament is also ample evidence. But since the Messiah was offered to the whole world as well as to the Jews, Christian historiography had two main tasks before it. It had to place the life of Jesus in the history of the Jews, upon the one hand, and in the general history of antiquity, upon the other. The latter problem was not forced upon the church until the pagan world began to take the new religion seriously. The relation of Christianity to Judiaism, however, was of vital importance from the beginning, for it involved the supreme question whether or not Jesus was the one in whom all of the prophecies were fulfilled.

The coming of the Messiah was the main continuation of Jewish national history. The whole sad drama of Jewish history may be said to have led one “searched the scriptures” for the evidences of the signs by which the advent could be recognized. The invitation to search the scriptures was, in appearance at least, a challenge to a scientific test of verification. If the information on of the life of Jesus corresponded with the details of the promises, there was a proof that all of the prophecies had been fulfilled. But only the Messianic prophecies were fulfilled. The rest of the prophecies had to be constructed out of fragmentary and uncertain references, and the only satisfactory way they could do it was to apply many of them was symbolism and allegory. Using non- Messianic prophecies as foretelling the life of Jesus had not been the purpose in the minds of their authors. But those who apply allegorical interpretation have held, through all the history of the church, that the texts were applicable and that the proof was thereby established in the harmony of the old and the new dispensations. The tool for the re-writing of history was the creation of what is called allegorical interpretation of texts.

WHAT IS MEANT BY ALLEGORICAL INTERPRETATION?

The word “allegory,” is derived from the Greek “alla,” meaning “other,” and “agoreuo,” meaning “proclaim.” It originally referred to a figure of speech that Cicero defined as a “continuous stream of metaphors.” According to Augustine, allegory is a mode of speech in which one thing is understood by another. Allegory differs from the parable in its more systematic presentation of the different features of the idea which it illustrates, as well as in its contents which are concerned with the exposition of theoretical truths rather than practical exhortation.

THE HERETIC HISTORY OF ALLEGORICAL (SPIRITUAL) INTERPRETATION

The use of allegory to explain, or explain away, texts was not a creation of Christian historians, for the device was not unknown to pagan literature or philosophy. As far back as the sixth century B.C., Homer was interpreted allegorically by Theagenes of Rhegium, and pagan philosophy had constant recourse to allegory to harmonize myth with reason.

Allegorism was well established in Alexandrian Judaism, especially by Philo, who made a systematic use of it to bridge the chasm between the Old Testament revelation and the Platonic philosophy. Philo compares the literal sense of Scripture to the shadow which the body casts, finding its authentic, profounder truth in the spiritual meaning which it symbolizes. He does not want to depreciate or abolish the literal or the historical meaning but looks to it as man’s body which merits the fullest respect.

The School of Alexandria adopted the allegorical interpretation of the Holy Scripture, believing that it hides the truth and at the same time reveals it. It hides the truth from the ignorant, whose eyes are blinded by sin and pride, hence they are prevented from the knowledge of the truth. At the same time, it always reveals what is new to the renewed eyes of believers. Clement of Alexandria is considered the first Christian theologian who uses allegorical interpretation, giving a cause of using it in a practical way. He says that the Bible has hidden meanings to incite us to search and discover the words of salvation, which are hidden from those who despise them. He said the truth is in the pearls which must not be offered to the swines. Other early church fathers such as Irenaeus and Tertullian also used this method of interpretation.

His disciple, Origen, adds other justifications of using allegorical interpretation to the Scriptures. Origen often denies the literal meaning. For example, he says, “Could any man of sound judgment suppose that the first, second and third days (of creation) had an evening and a morning, when there were as yet no sun or moon or stars? Could anyone be so unintelligent as to think that God made a paradise somewhere in the east and planted it with trees, like a farmer, or that in that paradise he put a tree of life, a tree you could see and know with your senses, a tree you could derive life from by eating its fruit with the teeth in your head? When the Bible says that God used to walk in paradise in the evening or that Adam hid behind a tree, no one, I think, will question that these are only fictions, stories of things that never actually happened, and that figuratively they refer to certain mysteries.” He explained away the darker happenings in the history of Israel and even in the New Testament, he treated stories such as that of the Devil taking Jesus up into a high mountain and showing him the kingdoms of the world as parables or fables. Gnosticism took hold of some of his phases and attempted to harmonize Christianity with the parallel cults of paganism. Neo-platonism was doing much the same for paganism itself. The cults of Asia and Egypt were drawn together and interpreted in the light of the worship of Demeter or Dionysus.

Celsus was a pagan Greek who wrote the most notable attack upon Christianity of which we have record from those early times. He charges the Christians with obscurantism, stating that their teachers generally tell him “Do not investigate,” while at the same time exhorting him to believe. Origen was apparently a little ashamed and he reminded Celsus that all men have not the leisure to investigate. Origin frankly admits the paucity of sources for the history of Christianity, as he allegorized most of history away. He recognized the weakness of Christian historiography but failed to see how it could be remedied. In so many words Origen admitted that since the sources for Christian history cannot be checked up “by external evidence, there is nothing left but to accept their main outlines on faith.”

Nevertheless, a vigorous reaction against the Alexandrian allegorism made itself manifest in the fourth and fifth centuries. Its center was Antioch, which concentrated on the literal sense of the holy Scriptures.

The allegorical method promoted by Origen (who taught many other errors as well) nevertheless became the basis for the Roman Catholic church’s use of Scripture. Some of these heretic teachings have unfortunately also been adopted by the Reformers, especially regarding prophecies, eschatology and often anti-Semitic approaches towards Israel and the Jews. It has also become a handy tool in the hands of other cults and false teachers, such as those who teaches the Prosperity gospel.

Christian scholars who believe the Bible, rather than the allegorical teachers, took up the task of reconciling the events of Jewish history with the annals of other histories, and worked into a convincing and definite scheme of parallel chronology the narrative from Abraham to Christ. Mathematics was applied to history – not simply to the biblical narrative but all that of the ancient world – and out of the chaos of fact and legend, of contradiction and absurdity, of fancy run riot and un-founded speculation, there was slowly hammered into shape that scheme of measured years back to the origins of Israel and then to the creation, which still largely prevails to-day. This is one of the most important things ever done by historians. Henceforth, for the next fifteen centuries and more, there was one sure path back to the origin of the world, a path along the Jewish past, and marked out by the absolute laws of mathematics and revelation.

FAILURE TO CONSIDER THE CONTEXT

Imagine that someone read you one sentence out of the middle of a novel. You would not know who any of the characters were, what had happened to them previously, or what the plot was about. Often this is how the Bible is read. Since the Bible is laid out with verse numbers (which have been added by editors, they were not in the original), it is often falsely assumed or presented as if each verse is a little literary work of its own, disconnected from anything else. Only if we have a shared body of information, study the whole of Scripture, understand the Jewish background of the Bible, and understand the setting of each book of the Bible, then a verse quoted from a given book will make sense to us. Yet many never gain this information.

The context of a verse exists at various levels – textual, literary and historical. The first is its immediate textual context. A word is found in a sentence, a sentence in a paragraph and a paragraph in a chapter, etc. Remembering that the chapter and verse designations were not in the original, one must read the entire section, preferably the whole book, before considering the meaning of a verse. This is merely treating the Bible as one would any other piece of literature.

The fact that the Bible is God’s inspired Word does not mean that it has some mystical, non-standard way of communicating. For example, “You shall not steal,” carries the same meaning if God says it as it does if said by an owner of a store. The fact that God’s inspired Word says it lends the phrase more authority and assures its validity, but it doesn’t change the meaning of the phrase. People err in assuming that because the Holy Spirit inspired the words of Scripture those words must have some hidden, secret, mystical meaning. The Bible follows the same grammatical and literary conventions as any other Jewish literature of its time. Its uniqueness is in its inerrancy and divine inspiration, not in how it is to be read and interpreted. So we must always consider a passage in its immediate grammatical context and not isolate it, looking for some obscure, cryptic meaning.

Another factor is a passage’s literary context. A verse from the Book of Proverbs should be treated as the type of literature it is, namely wisdom literature. A passage from Kings should be treated as historical narrative. The Bible is a collection of different books, written over many centuries. It contains various types of literature. Just as we would distinguish a written history of the United States from a technical journal on auto mechanics, we must treat a gospel as a different type of literature than an epistle. Common errors in interpretation result from a failure to do this. For example, when reading history, if the Bible says that so and so did this, it does not necessarily follow that it was good or bad. If the inspired account says that David arranged for Uriah to be killed, it follows that this surely happened. That the Bible tells about this action is not an endorsement of it. In this case the Bible makes it clear it was wrong. In many instances the historical narrative does not comment on the moral quality of someone’s act, but merely tells us about it. We may have to look elsewhere in the Bible, for example in didactic (teaching) sections, to find out whether such an act is good or evil.

For example, Saul consulted the witch of Endor and Samuel was summoned (1Samuel 28:7-16). It does not follow that the Bible endorses necromancy or that those who practice such things normally do contact the dead. On the contrary, the Bible forbids this practice (Deuteronomy 18:10). The passage in 1Samuel gives us the historical record of Saul’s sin. The teaching section of the Bible tells us that it is a sin. Often the historical sections do comment on the moral qualities of actions, but not always. The important issue is that we recognize the different types of literature (genré) and give this due consideration when interpreting a passage.

Another level of context is the historical context. The most blatant and common example of failing to consider the historical context is the failure to acknowledge that the Bible, Old and New Testaments, is a Jewish book. It contains many Jewish idioms whose meaning was clear to the early Jewish readers but often misunderstood by contemporary readers. We need to educate ourselves about the Hebrew background to Scriptures. For example, a common Jewish idiom used throughout the Bible is the phrase “son(s) of . . .” Rather than use an adjective, as we would, the Jews would say, for example, “sons of light” (1Thessalonians 5:5). This means “characterized by.” From passages such as this: “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44). This is an example of the Hebrew way of speaking of being the son of what one is characterized by. It was never meant to be taken that either the Jews or people in general are literal descendants of Satan. It would be to say that when we lie we are being “devilish.” False teachers prey on ignorance and mislead the uninformed.

There are other historical matters that help us understand Scripture. These include geography, political structures of the time, customs of other peoples with whom the Jews interacted, etc.

The Bible is a unity, though written by dozens of authors over many centuries, the Holy Spirit inspired it all. The Bible has an amazingly clear and consistent message. This serves as part of the evidence for its inspiration. Therefore, when interpreting a passage, we must consider how our proposed interpretation fits with the whole counsel of God as revealed throughout the Bible. For example, there are many passages that make it clear that Jesus was human and descended from the lineage of David. Yet it does not follow from passages that teach this that Jesus was only human. Many other passages teach that He is God. The whole counsel of God on the matter is that Jesus is fully human and fully divine God. This truth must inform our interpretation of any particular verse that speaks to us about Christ.

SOME MORE ABOUT THE DANGERS OF ALLEGORIZING SCRIPTURE

As mentioned in the introduction, allegorizing Scripture has a long and destructive history. The main “benefit” of allegorizing is the ability to remove real or apparent contradictions between Scriptures and current beliefs.

The reason many have been sold on the allegorical method is the false assumption that since the Bible is a spiritual book, inspired by the Holy Spirit, that it therefore contains hidden or secret meanings. The idea is that the truly spiritual person can discern meanings to passages of the Bible that are hidden from the unenlightened. There are even passages of the Bible that can be cited to seemingly justify this idea, such as 1Corinthians 2:14. However, it should be noted that the “things of the Spirit of God” that the natural man “cannot understand” are clearly revealed in the context of this passage. They concern the fact that central to God’s plan of salvation was a crucified Messiah, foolishness to Gentiles and an offense to the Jews (1Corinthians 1:18-29). The problem was not that a person couldn’t grasp the words that Paul preached – that Jesus Christ was crucified, died, and rose from the dead. The claims of the gospel were clear enough. The problem was that the natural man refused to accept God’s wisdom. So this passage does not teach a secret meaning to Scriptures that can be extracted by a clever allegorist. If so, then why not say Jesus didn’t really die and rise again, it is just an allegory? Paul taught a literal cross with literal words.

Most Reformed and prosperity preachers are quite adept at allegorizing passages of Scripture. By following this type of interpretation, non-Reformers can just as well argue that Jesus have taught modern success theories, positive thinking, liberation theology (Marxism), Unitarianism, the New Age, or anything else. Remember that the key reason for the allegorical method’s existence was to integrate the Bible with Greek philosophy or whatever other contemporary worldly ideas that seemed popular and desirable at the time. The resurrection can be allegorized into the new hope that springs into being with the cycles of nature: bunnies, and green grass. Or it can be allegorized as something analogous to ugly larvae changing through metamorphosis into butterflies. By saying this, I do not mean to mock the resurrection, but merely use it as an example of how dangerous allegorical interpretation really is and how it opens opportunities for false teachings.

Preachers are prone to more “softer” versions of allegorizing. What this means is taking passages that are not really about what is preached on but lend themselves nicely nevertheless. For example, John 10:10 says, “I have come that you might have life, and have it to the full.” The context of this passage is that Jesus claims to be the true “Shepherd” of Israel as opposed to the false religious leaders who were motivated by self-interest and did not concern themselves with the welfare of the flock. It is quite a stretch to take this passage as meaning that we should enjoy everything life has to offer. This belittles the true claim of the passage. The claim is that Jesus Himself is God, whom the Jews knew to be the only true Shepherd (Psalm 23:1). Only God incarnate can lead us through the valley of the shadow of death into everlasting life. Modern hearers rarely find out the true impact of powerful passages like this, they are merely interested in listening to a modern man who can make their lives a little more pleasant. Allegorizing the Bible lends itself to this end.

This does not mean that the Bible never uses allegory or non-literal terminology. What I am addressing is the ignoring of the intent of the original author and using mysticism or allegory to read one’s own meaning into various passages. If the Bible uses metaphor or allegory, it still has one meaning, the meaning of the author. An author uses an allegory to make a particular point.

The same is true for parables. Parables are not allegories, but short stories that make one or more points. For example, the “parable of the prodigal son” is not an allegory about backsliding. It is a story that illustrates the hardness of heart of the Jewish leaders who were offended at the fact that unworthy sinners were coming to Jesus (Luke 15:2). The key person is the older brother, whose attitude was that of the Jewish leaders of the time. Perhaps one could argue that allegorizing this into a sermon about backsliding does no harm, people are motivated to come to Jesus. But think about this: whenever we fail to show the author’s intent when interpreting a passage, we show a lack of respect for the Bible. If the Holy Spirit inspired the human writers to convey His meaning to us, how do we improve on that by ignoring the Holy Spirit’s meaning and supplying our own? When we do, we subtly create a disrespect for the Bible in the minds of our hearers.

LOVING THE TRUTH

Sadly, many in the churches have a distaste for learning or a lack of openness to ensure that what they were taught was in fact in line with the true messages of Scripture. This was brilliantly documented in David Well’s book, No Place for Truth. There is an anti-scholastic bias that prevails, causing people to only concern themselves with what seems appealing and this can be fatal. It’s one thing to misunderstand, it is another not to care. Once some people find out some study is necessary to properly interpret Scripture or that a study might proof their “traditional” education wrong, they opt out immediately. They come up with references to books, links and YouTube videos to defend their views, rather than presenting Scriptural references. And if they do, they also add to or explain away the actual meaning of the additional Scripture they present.

The worst problem I have encounter is the “I don’t care whatever Scripture you present” attitude. You can sit down, and provide clear, incontrovertible evidence for certain Biblical truths, and some people could care less. They just want to keep their cozy unbiblical ideas and remain comfortably undisturbed. If we refuse to learn from the Scriptures, then our experiences will not lead us closer to God either. Being too proud or too lazy to learn can be spiritually fatal.

If we truly love God and His Word, then we will rejoice to learn the way of the Lord more perfectly. We will long to learn more about the whole counsel of God, the meanings of Biblical terms, the historical background of Scripture and the author’s (not the church father’s or the pastor’s) intent for the meaning of various passages.

UNDERSTANDING THE NEW HEAVENS, NEW EARTH AND THE NEW JERUSALEM

There are many different interpretations about the New Heavens, New Earth and the New Jerusalem. Most of the opinions are based on speculation. The following merely provide the writers personal understanding:

GOD – THE BEGINNING AND THE END

Revelation 21:6a says, “And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. ” The words “It is done” almost reminds of the last words of Christ on the cross when He said, “It is finished,” as we read in John 19:30. Christ achieved the redemptive purpose of God on the cross but here redemptive history finally ends.

1 Corinthians 15:24-28 says, “Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.” As the last enemy, which is death, has now been abolished, Christ delivers up the Kingdom to God the Father.

God is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. This is also repeated in Revelation 1:8 and in Revelation 22:13. He was in control in starting everything and He will be in control, ending everything. His sovereign purpose and plan with human history will be fulfilled.

HEAVEN FOR THE FAITHFUL

Heaven is spoken of 582 times in the KJV, 622 times in the NIV and 692 times in the NKJV. Of these, the word Heaven on average appears 54 times in the book of Revelation.

Revelation 21:1 to Revelation 22:5 gives us a description of heaven.

Revelation 21:6b-8 makes it clear that not everybody would enter heaven. “I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.””

In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 we also find a list of those who would not inherent the Kingdom and thus eternity, “ Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”

In Galatians 5:19-21 we basically find a repeat, “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

In 1 John 2:15-17 we read, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

In Revelation 22:17 we find the last invitation in the Bible. “And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.”

In Isaiah 55:1 we also read, “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.” Matthew 5:6 says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.” John 4:13-14 is another great text, “ Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.””

But seeking salvation is not adequate to ensure entrance to heaven. We also need to live in faith in Christ to overcome the world. Already in Revelation 2:7 we read, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” Revelation 3:5 also says, “He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.” 1 John 5:4-5 says, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”

There will be no sin or ungodliness in heaven and everyone will be holy. Matthew 5:8 says we will see God, “Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.” Hebrews 12:14 confirms it, “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”

Revelation 21:27 puts it this way, “But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.” In Revelation 22:14-15 it says, “Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.”

Scripture actually describes three levels of heavens. The first heaven is the atmosphere around the earth and the air that we breathe. The second heaven is the stratospheric heaven, the heaven of the heavenly bodies such as the planets, the stars and the moons. In 2 Corinthians 12:2 Paul was taken up into the third heaven, the divine heaven where God dwells and where angels and believers are. Men like Enoch and Elijah already have their glorified bodies in heaven as they have been raptured.

Everything regarding our spiritual life and destiny is in heaven. Our Father, our Saviour, our Comforter, our citizenship and our reward are there. A true longing for heaven is evidence of true salvation and demonstrates one’s love for the Lord. The more we set our affections on the things above, the less likely we are to follow the things of the flesh. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.” Without the hope and anticipation of heaven and eternity there is very little reason and meaning to live for.

Christ is already preparing a place for us in heaven, the “New Jerusalem.” John 14:1-4 provides so much comfort for true believers, including the Tribulation saints. “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

1 John 3:1-2 says, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”

END OF THE PRESENT EARTH AND HEAVEN

Revelation 20:11 said, “I saw a Great White Throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away and no place was found for them.”

Satan, the Antichrist, the false prophet and the ungodly are now in the eternal Lake of Fire. The entire universe has also been destroyed. In 2 Peter 3:7 we read, “But the present heavens and earth by His Word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgement and destruction of ungodly men.” The present heaven and earth will be uncreated simultaneously with the destruction of the ungodly.

CREATION OF A NEW HEAVEN AND A NEW EARTH

“Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed. And I have put my words in your mouth and covered you in the shadow of my hand, establishing the heavens and laying the foundations of the earth, and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’” (Isaiah 51:6,16)

God creates a New eternal dwelling place for the godly of all the ages, the angels and the four creatures. Not only will we have a New dwelling but also our glorified bodies!

Revelation 21:1-3 says, “Now I saw a New heaven and a New earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.”

The terminology of a New heaven and a New earth is borrowed from the Old Testament. Isaiah 65:17 says, “For behold, I create New heavens and a New earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.” In Isaiah 66:22 we read, “For as the New heavens and the New earth Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the LORD, “So shall your descendants and your name remain.”

In this instance, the use of the word “New” does not refer to the word “neos” which means New as in opposed to old. It relates to the ancient Greek word “kainos” which means New in quality. It is basically a replacement of the heaven and earth we now know. Psalm 102:26 says, “They will perish, but You will endure; Yes, they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will change them, And they will be changed.” Sin and death entered and corrupted the world and the universe and therefore, God has to wipe it out. Satan and his demons will never enter the New heaven and neither will sin enter the New earth.

Heaven will be the capital city within the infinity of the New heaven and the New earth.

HEAVEN COMING DOWN

In Hebrews 11:8-10 it says, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” He went to his temporary inheritance but was actually looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. Hebrews 11:13-16 speaks about the heavenly hope of all who lives in faith and in Hebrews 11:16 it refers to the heavenly city, “But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.”

In Hebrews 12:22-23 we read, “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect.” Hebrews 13:14 says, “We do not here have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come.”

In the book of Revelation, we find the first reference to the New Jerusalem in Revelation 3:12. “He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My New name.”

This will be the eternal “holy city,” from where God will reign and where every single being would be holy. Revelation 20:6 of Revelation says, “Blessed and holy is the one who has part in the first resurrection that takes people to heaven.”

Every Old Testament saint and everybody who died in Christ throughout the ages are already there in their spirits. The “New Jerusalem” is actually none other than the current third heaven spoken about earlier. The New heaven and a New earth will be a complete new universe and once it has been created, heaven will come down and completely fill the new universe. This is where all of the redeemed will live in the heavenly city, the “New Jerusalem.”

Revelation 21:10 says, “And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God”

John MacArthur is of the opinion that even during the time of the Millennial Kingdom, we will go back and forth into the earth in glorified form and back to the holy city, the “New” Jerusalem. And then finally the holy city will become the capital city of eternity.

The city is like a bride because all of the redeemed are forever united to God and to the Lamb. In Revelation 21:2 we read that the “New” Jerusalem was “prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” In Revelation 21:9 the angel said to John, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” The marriage between Christ and His bride is now entering its eternal stage. The citizens are the eternal bride of Christ, now enlarged beyond the raptured Church as it includes all of the redeemed throughout all ages, the Old Testament saints, the Tribulation saints, the redeemed remnant of Israel and everybody redeemed during the time of the Millennial Kingdom.

Revelation 21:3 says, “And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.”

The tabernacle is symbolically the Father’s house in the “New” Jerusalem in the midst of the redeemed.

This reminds of Leviticus 26:11-12 where God also once said to the Jews, “ I will set My tabernacle among you, and My soul shall not abhor you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people.” The difference is that there would now be no need for a temple or offerings, as seen in Revelation 21:22, as God and the Lamb are our Temple. “But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.”

LIFE IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD

1 Corinthians 2:9 says, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him.” And that is exactly what we will experience in heaven.

In Revelation 21:4 we read these comforting words, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” There will not be any tests, trials, tribulations, heartaches, pain or any sad or bad things happening in heaven, as we experience in this current life on earth.

There will be no more pain because the healing promise in the atonement is fulfilled. Isaiah 53:5 says, “But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.” These words do not only refer to spiritual healing but also to physical healing as we see in Matthew 8:17, “In order that He might fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah, He Himself took our infirmities and carried away our diseases.”

In addition, Revelation 7:16 says, “ They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat”

Revelation 21:1 mentions that there will no longer be a sea. Currently, three quarters of the earth’s surface is covered with water in the oceans and on the land. This means that our glorified bodies would not be dependent on physical water. Revelation 22:1 says “And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” As there is no more sea which it could flow to, this also cannot be a river as we know it. Once again we cannot add our own views on this. All that the Bible teaches is that the water of life is as clear as crystal and comes down from the throne of God and of the Lamb. The water of life is symbolically of salvation, purity, holiness and eternal life flowing down through the city from the throne of God and of the Lamb. Psalm 46:4 said, “There is a river, the streams of which make glad the city of God.”

The greatest joy of heaven is not the beauty or the experience of praise and worship with reunited loved ones, to be with God as Christ and to have fellowship with Him.

In Revelation 22:3-5 it says there will also no longer be any curse. We will serve Him and have His name on our foreheads, marked as His personal possessions. “And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.”

We will reign with God, as Revelation 3:21 says, “To him who overcomes I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne.”

We will adore God and worship day and night as we read in all passages in Revelation which deal with heaven. Revelation 7:15 for example said, “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them.”

Revelation 22:2 says, “In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”

The tree of life is another symbol and not a tree as we know one. In Genesis 2:9 God also spoke of a tree of life. “And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” The tree of life was a symbol of eternal life and of blessing.

Proverbs 11:30 says, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise.” A righteous person produces a tree of life, which eventually leads to blessing, fulfilment, contentment, joy and happiness and this is exactly what heaven would be like.

The twelve kinds of fruit probably indicate that life will have a variety of good things. There will be praise and worship, singing and many other things, all for the glory of God. The reference to “months” could also indicate that our activities would be changing all the time. The healing leaves spoken of cannot relate to illness or pain as we learned that there would not be any sickness in heaven.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HEAVEN

Revelation 21:11 starts with the greatest characteristic of heaven as, “Having the glory of God.” God’s glory is who He is and He manifests His invisible spiritual attributes as light. Psalm 36:9 says, “In Thy light we see light.” In Psalm 104:2 we read, “Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.” In Exodus 24:17 it says, “The appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the mountain top.”

There will be no need for the sun or the moon to shine as the glory of God illumines it and the lamp is the Lamb as we read in Revelation 21:23-24a. “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light” Revelation 22:5 says, “There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.”

Isaiah also prophesied this in Isaiah 60:19. “No longer will you have the sun for light by day, nor for brightness will the moon give you light, but you will have the Lord for an everlasting light and your God for your glory.”

It literally says that heaven dwells within the very presence of God and Christ which literally fills the whole New heaven and New earth. God is already omnipresent right now, but currently Satan and his demons are still present in the universe.

Revelation 21:24 says, “And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.” Some scholars see this as describing something in the Millennial Kingdom but it cannot be as the entire chapter is about the New heaven and the New earth which come after the Millennial Kingdom. The use of the word “nations” in this context basically refers to the redeemed from every tongue and tribe and nation who will all be walking in the light. Everybody will now be of the same tongue and tribe and nation with no division.

Some scholars see the reference to “the kings of the earth” as some structural hierarchy in heaven, but all of the redeemed would be at the same level. This most probably relates to rulers still being alive at the end of the Millennial Kingdom, taken into the New heavens and the New earth without going through death.

The light makes heaven astonishing beautiful and in Revelation 21:11, John says, “Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal”

Revelation 21:12-13 describes the outside of heaven. “Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.”

To add anything to the literal meaning of these verses would be wild guessing, which is strictly prohibited in Revelation 22:18-19. “For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”

It is a place with dimensions and it has an outer wall. Citizens can go in and out of it because it has gates. Revelation 21:21 mentions that the twelve gates were twelve pearls – each individual gate was of one pearl.

Heaven is clearly a place for believers under both the Old and the New covenant. Revelation 21:12 says that a name of one of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel was written on each gate. At all of the twelve gates, there would be an angel. These gates are placed in the same way that God will organize His people around the Millennial temple as described in Ezekiel 48. Furthermore, “the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones and on them were the twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.” According to Ephesians 2:19-20 the Apostles are the foundation of the Church. “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.”

God is always measuring out what belongs to Him. In Ezekiel 40 to 48 it gives a description of the Millennial temple and in Ezekiel 40:3 God is measuring it. In Revelation 11:1 John referred to the Tribulation temple when he said, “Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, “Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there.” Now Revelation 21:15 mentions that the angel “had a gold measuring rod to measure the city and its gates and its wall.”

The city is laid out as a square as all sides and angels are equal. In Revelation 21:16 we see that it is measured out as about 1500 miles cubed. When God gave orders for the building of the holy place in the tabernacle and the temple on earth, it was also a cube. It was the same with Solomon’s temple in 1 Kings 6:20.

It says that the wall is about 18 inches or 216 feet which is rather short and most probably refers to its width. The wall was made of jasper and the city was pure gold like clear glass. Just imagine how great this should be as not even the gold currently here on earth is like clear glass. This is unique.

The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. Eight of these twelve stones are found in the breastplate of the high priest as seen in Exodus 28 and Exodus 39. The brilliant colours of these stones through which the light of God’s glory is shining must be indescribably beautiful.

In Revelation 21:25 we see that the gates will never be closed as there will never be night and heaven is a place of rest, safety and security. The same is said in Isaiah 60:11. “Your gates shall be open continually; day and night they shall not be shut, that people may bring to you the wealth of the nations, with their kings led in procession.” (Isaiah 60:11)

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH

There is often confusion as some scholars interpret Ezekiel 40-48 as referring to the same holy city as the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21. Jehovah-Shammah is a Christian transliteration of the Hebrew word meaning “Jehovah is there.” It is the name given to the city in Ezekiel’s vision in Ezekiel 48:35. Here is a comparison, indicating that Ezekiel actually spoke about Jerusalem during the Millennial reign.

New Jerusalem / Jehovah Shammah

1) 12 gates named after Israel (Revelation 21:12)/ 12 gates named after Israel (Ezekiel 48:30)
2) 12 foundations named for Apostles (Revelation 21:14)/ Foundation not described
3) 1500 miles square and tall (Revelation 21:16)/ One mile square (Ezekiel 48:30)
4) Coming Down from heaven (Revelation 21:2)/Located in Israel on Earth (Ezekiel 40:2)
5) No Temple. God and the Lamb are its Temple (Revelation 21:22)/ Temple just north of the city (Ezekiel 40:2)
6) No sin; nothing impure can enter (Revelation 21:27)/Daily sin offerings in the Temple (Ezekiel 45:13-15,17)
7) No more death (Revelation 21:4)/Still death (Ezekiel 44:25 also Isaiah 65:20)
No natural beings. Only the perfected (21:27)/ Natural Beings (Ezekiel 46:16)

HOPE IN TIMES OF DARKNESS

According to the dictionary, hope is describing as “a wish to get or do something or for something to happen or be true, especially something that seems possible or likely.” This is hope from the world’s perspective. The world sees hope as a wish or a desire. Hope, for the world, is a longing for something that may or may not take place.

The Bible teaches us a vastly different definition of hope. Jeremiah 17:7 says, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.” Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” While the world says that hope is merely a fond wish or desire, the words used for hope in the Bible teach us that hope is a deep settled confidence that God will keep His promises.

We all have battles, but do we have biblical hope? Are we resting in the sure confidence that God will do just as He has promised He would? That is the essence of hope and hope is a possession we all need to have in the midst of our battles.

OUR CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD PROVIDES HOPE

Declare personal faith in the Lord.

GOD IS OUR LIGHT

As light, God delivers His people from darkness – Colossians 1:13 says, “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”. As light God guides our steps.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.” (Psalm 37:23)

“Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

GOD IS OUR STRENGTH

As strength God delivers His people from defeat – 1 Corinthians 15:57 says, “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)

“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.” (2 Corinthians 2:14)

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord.” (Isaiah 54:17)

Light and strength of God serve to give us hope even in the midst of battle! Because of Who our God is, we need not fear any enemy or anything that should arise against us. Satan himself is no match for our sovereign God!

GOD NEVER CHANGES

In the Psalms David often declares that his present hope in the Lord rests upon that which the Lord has done for him in the past. God did not fail him then, and He will not fail His child today.

That same confidence is ours today! The God we serve is unchangeable and he is the same God with the same power that He has always been. He has never, and He will never change. Because He has been faithful in the past, we can count on His being faithful now.

“For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.” (Malachi 3:6)

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

Think of all the things He has done; the victories He has won; the enemies He has vanquished; the mountains He has moved; the victories He has won. Think on these things and remember that the God who performed countless wonders in the past is still that same God today! Think about all of the challenges in your own life God helped you to overcome. That should give His people hope!

COMMITMENT TO GOD PROVIDES HOPE

Not only does living with our faith give us hope; but also living faithful to the Lord provides a measure of hope that cannot otherwise exist.

BE COMMITTED TO LINGERING NEAR GOD
We should have a yarning to spend our entire lives in the house of the Lord. It should be a want to be in that place where the Lord dwells and where the Lord’s presence is real. In Psalm 84:1-4, David envies the little birds that make their nests around the tabernacle. They can be near the house of God all the time, while David cannot. He has a desire to be where God is; to be in that place where God is worshiped and honoured. That is his heartbeat.

That ought to be our desire as well. We need that same passion to be where the Lord is honoured and where He is worshiped. Of course, we have the church but there ought to be a desire to find that place of closeness and intimacy with the Lord. We can have that place where we can linger in His presence all the days of our lives.

If there is a genuine desire to be near Him, it will manifest itself in clear action. There will be a commitment to prayer and to the study of the Word of God. There will be a commitment to public and private worship. Those who want to linger near the Lord will find a way. And, when we make a move toward Him, He will make a move toward us.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8)

BE COMMITTED TO LOVING GOD

We cannot only be committed to being where the Lord is but should also be committed to worshiping the Lord. This should be the goal of every believer. If we are going to worship the Lord, we are going to have to do it His way. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24) As we yield to the Spirit of God and worship God for who He is as He is revealed in the Word of God, we will be engaged in the business of loving Him.

BE COMMITTED TO LEANING ON THE LORD

There should be a desire to call upon the Lord, to commune with God, and to make requests of God. By declaring out utter dependence upon the Lord for the necessities of life, it becomes another image of worship. We need to look beyond our own abilities and see the limitless provisions of the Lord. We need nothing more than to be able to call upon the Lord
We have a limitless resource been given in prayer! We are invited to pray.

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and [a]mighty things, which you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

We are promised that God will hear and answer our prayers.

“It shall come to pass, That before they call, I will answer; And while they are still speaking, I will hear.” (Isaiah 65:24)

“And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you [a]ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (John 14:13-14)

“And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23-24)

Therefore, let us also learn to lean upon Him. Instead of worry and fear, let us learn to turn to the Lord. He will see to our needs.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7; 19)

He will never fail us nor will He ever turn us away empty-handed.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:7-11)

Our commitment to Him provides hope in the day of our battles. As we Linger near Him; Love on Him and Lean on Him, we can have the absolute confidence that He will see to our needs and to the things that would cause us to worry.

OUR COMFORT IN GOD PROVIDES HOPE

In Psalm 27:5 David said, “For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.” A king’s pavilion was a tent that erected in the middle of the army’s encampment. The tent was then surrounded by an army of brave soldiers. With all the host of the army camped about, the king’s pavilion was the safest place on the battlefield. Those who were fortunate enough to be allowed to enter the king’s pavilion were protected by the soldiers and entertained by the king during the battle.

As the battles of life rage about us, we are safely tucked away in our King’s pavilion. The Bible tells us that “your life is hid with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:3) Those who have entered His pavilion are protected by Him and, even while the battles rage around them, they are entertained with the peace and joy of the King Himself. This is promise to those who will abide in that close place. No enemy can penetrate the defences and enter this private place. It is protected from the enemy!

The assurance of His sheltering place allows us to weather the storms of life with hope. This was what allowed David to face Goliath. This was the confidence that kept Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. This was the assurance that gripped the heart of Daniel. This was the knowledge that allowed Paul to continue, even when he suffered greatly.

“And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. I have become a fool in boasting; you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you; for in nothing was I behind the most eminent apostles, though I am nothing.” (2 Corinthians 12:7-11)

The Holy of Holies was a place where the very presence of God dwelt and the glory of God could be seen. It was there that God took David during the battles of his life. It was there David found himself shut up with God and shut off from the world around him.

It is amazing that there is a place of solitude in a world filled with people. There is a place that you and I can flee to during the crushing battles that rage about us. A place that affords us quiet, peace and the profound presence of God. Those who have learned to abide in Him have been to that place and know the glory of it. It is a place where the enemy dares not follow. It is a place reserved for those who love the Lord their God. Have you ever been to that place? That place where God meets with you and you alone. That place where all else falls away and you are left with Him and Him alone? That is the place He invites those who abide to enter.

Stephen was in that place at the moment of his death. (Acts 7:55-56) Paul was in that place during his life. 2 Corinthians 12:1-4; Acts 27:23) It is possible for us to enter that sacred, secret place where the world dims away and God becomes larger than everything else.

David had the assurance that even when life threatens to overflow him, the Lord will set him on a rock, a place that is unchangeable, powerful and immovable. Of course, this Rock he refers to is none other than the Lord Himself.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me,
And heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps.” (Psalm 40:1-2)

The rock referred to is a rock that juts far above the battles going on at its feet. It allows those who ride its heights to rise far above the tumult beneath.

This is the gift to all those who know Him! We are promised that we have a place of refuge that will lift us far above the stormy seas that would threaten to drown us. Like the eagle, who takes refuge above the storm until it has passed; those who abide in Him are given grace that bears them higher than the storms and keeps them safe until danger has passed. Those who wish to rise above there circumstances are given wings to do so!

“But those who wait on the Lord, Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

The believer is required to do nothing but be in a close relationship to the Lord. These things are done by the Lord for His child.

David says that he will worship the Lord; he will praise the Lord; because of the things the Lord has done for him. Because the Lord has lifted him above the battles; because the Lord has hidden him away in the secret place; because the Lord sheltered him away from the terrors of the battles; he will praise His name.

“And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.” (Psalm 27:6)

When hope has turned to reality in our lives; when the Lord has come through for us again and delivered us from the enemy; we should be quick to praise Him and offer to Him the worship and adoration He deserves. When He brings us through our battles, He will put us in a special place from which we can exalt His lovely Name.

“Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” (Hebrews 13:15)

Are you fighting some battles today? Of course, you are! But, in the midst of your battles, do you have hope? Do you have the deep settled confidence that everything is going to be alright? If you do praise the Lord, for He has already brought to that special place of blessing from which you can offer praise to His name.

But, if you lack that hope, it can be obtained. How? You can do this by reaffirming your confidence in the Lord; by renewing your commitment to the Lord; and by resting in your Comfort in the Lord. Do you need to talk to Him about your battles and about your hope? If you do, do not postpone and keep on praying.

THE “REVELATION AND THE ROTHSCHILDS” LIE

In April 2009 the Idaho Observer published an article called, “Revelation and the Rothschild connection,” which was written by Anne Wilder Chamberlain. Now, 9 years later in 2018, it is once again widely being used as propaganda to defend and advance unbiblical teachings such as Covenant theology, Amillennialism and Replacement theology. After I received a number of requests for my opinion on this document, I decided to publish this article on HEAVENLY REMNANT.

The abbreviations used is this article are as follows:
AWC – Idaho Observer / Anne Wilder Chamberlain and their sources
HR – Heavenly Remnant
Amills – Amillennials and those who support Covenant and Replacement theologies

HALF A BIBLE

According to AWS, to support Hitler’s genocidal agenda, the Church hierarchy removed as many as 72 books from the Bible. Ironically, those who support the AWS article are the same ones who choose to be known for following Sola Scriptura. They are also the ones who say that Satan is already bound. I strongly doubt that God would have allowed a single man to remove more than half of His Word, thus leaving all generations subsequent to the Hitler era with less than half a Bible. By believing this lie, they basically give Satan undeserved credit. In addition, with Hitler’s hatred towards the Jews, I am surprised at all of the Scripture he “allowed” to remain, which speaks about God’s positive plans with the nation of Israel.

THE OLD LIE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF DISPENSATIONALISM

AWS says that Christians predominantly believed that all Biblical prophecy had been fulfilled, until some “believers” changed this position in the early 19th century through fearmongering. AWS then also mocks these “believers” as those whose only remaining “hope” is to be raptured off this planet and into heaven before God destroys this wicked world. They call John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) the father of dispensationalism. Ironically, AWS themselve only quotes from books and articles written by Amills in the 19th to 21st centuries to back their unbiblical views.

While modern premillennialism depends upon Scriptural foundations for its apologetic and theological statement, it has nevertheless a significant historical context. It is regrettable that moderate dispensationalism and premillennialism has seldom had fair consideration in historical treatments of Christian doctrine. Peters in his classic work, “The Theocratic Kingdom,” cites no less than fifteen advocates of premillennialism in the first century. While his classification in some cases no doubt is debatable, in others it is undisputed. The notable testimony of Papias, who was associated with the Apostle John, is of special weight. Papias who lived in the first century and the beginning of the second lists as adherents of premillennialism Aristio, John the Presbyter and the Apostles Andrew, Peter, Philip, Thomas, James, John, and Matthew. He certainly was in a position to know their views, and his testimony is an important link in sustaining the fact that the disciples continued in the Jewish expectation of a kingdom on earth. Peters also lists as premillenarians Clement of Rome, Barnabas, Hermas, Ignatius, and Polycarp. In contrast to these clear evidences, not one adherent, not one line of evidence is produced sustaining the idea that any first-century Christians held Augustinian amillennialism—that the interadvent period was the millennial. Further, there is no evidence whatever that premillennialism was even disputed. It was the overwhelming-majority view of the early church.

THE SCOFIELD BIBLE

As always is the case with these twisters of Scripture, AWS also attempted to link dispensationalism to the Scofield Bible. Well, I do have a surprise for them. What I have learned about prophecy and God’s relationship with Israel, I learned from the KJV and related versions of God’s Word. The difference comes in as some believe the Bible exactly as it was given by God, while others add the “wisdom” of men, by applying unverifiable allegorical interpretation.

REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY AND ANTI-SEMITISM

AWS disputes the view of God’s 7,000 years cycle of time and the fulfilment of prophecy regarding the reformation of Israel in 1948. AWS also calls dispensationalist Christian Zionism because they believe that “God is able to graft [the Jews] in again” and to fulfill all the promises made to the genetic seed of Abraham.

AWS also insults the blessing of Isaac in Genesis 27:29 concerning Israel, which reads, “Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.” According to them, this has fallen away during the curse of Balaam (Numbers 24:9), when “God told Moses that if Israel did not keep His commands and decrees, He would destroy them from the face of the land (Deuteronomy 6:15-16), which he has done twice—In 585 BC and again in 70 AD.”

AWS further states that the “state of Israel,” as a geographical location, was given to Abraham in 2081 BC (Genesis 15:17-21) as part of a covenant. When Jesus came, he brought the new covenant and Israel fell, to be replaced by Christianity. Jesus told His disciples, “This is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” AWS even goes as far as asking the question whether dispensationalist premillennial theology is a Luciferian plan to cause Christians to think if they go against Israel, that they are going against God and delaying the second coming of Christ.

It is HR’s humble opinion that such claims could only be made by the blatant ignorance or twisting of Scripture. Amills always agree with Scripture up to the point where it talks about God’s punishment of Israel but conveniently ignore the rest of Scripture which deals with the physical and spiritual restoration of the Jewish nation. By applying the “wisdom” of man, the make God out as a broker of promises and a liar.

THE ”KHAZARIAN” TOOL

They go on to say that the state of Israel has a connection with the Rothschilds and calls it the “Armageddon plot.” Once again, predictably, the favourite “Khazarian” tool used by Amillennialists is also being applied to all Jews by AWS.

In short, AWS and those who practice Replacement theology use the following story:
“By 1823, the Rothschilds had taken over the financial operations of the Catholic Church worldwide. As the 19th century came to an end, it is estimated that the Rothschild family controlled half the wealth of the world. In 1914, at the start of World War I, they financed the Germans, the British and the French and controlled the three main European news agencies and used them to stir the public into fervour for war. A Rothschild agent then sent a Zionist delegation from America to Britain with a promise to bring America into the war on the side of the British, provided the British agree to give the land of Palestine to the Rothschilds. America entered the First World War on April 6, 1917.

On 2 November 1917, the British Foreign Secretary drafted a letter commonly known as the, “Balfour Declaration,” which gave the House of Rothschild 80 percent of the land now called Israel for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.”

On September 1, 1939, the Second World War started when Germany invaded Poland. Using the slaughter of Jews in Germany to bring hatred against the German people, with this war the Rothschilds would also increase the power of communism to a level equaling that of united Christendom. The war went as planned: $billions were spent, millions were killed and the state of Israel was created. Tribunals were convened after the war to investigate and punish Nazi war criminals. If there was any mention as to which bankers were providing Hitler with financial assistance, that testimony has been edited from the historical record.

In 1945 giant steps towards the Rothschilds’ goal of world domination were achieved when the United Nations was approved. In 1947 the British transferred control of Palestine to the United Nations, which resolved to have Palestine partitioned into two states, one Jewish and one Arab, with Jerusalem to remain as an international zone. In the spring of 1948, the Rothschilds bribed President Harry S. Truman with $2 million in campaign funds to recognize Israel as a sovereign state. The flag of Israel was unveiled and, despite tremendous opposition, the emblem on the flag is a blue colored version of the Rothschild red hexagram.

The House of Rothschild funded the Nazis and then founded Israel, not as a home for Jewish people, but as a base for the terrorists who created that state in order to operate a global terror and political manipulation network. The influence of its intelligence arm, Mossad, is vast for this tiny country because it is funded by the Rothschild global power elite. The motto of the Mossad is probably the most disgusting secret service motto in the world: “By way of deception, thou shalt do war.

Political Zionism is an agency of Big Business. It is being used by Jewish and Christian financiers in this country and Great Britain, to make Jews believe that Palestine will be ruled by a descendant of King David who will ultimately rule the world. What delusion! It will lead to war between Arabs and Jews and eventually to war between Muslims and non-Muslims. That will be the turning point of history.

Genuine Jewish people are being used. Jewish leadership has perverted the idea of a holy people chosen to advocate morality into a ‘self chosen’ elite to take God’s place. But when critics suggest that the ‘chosen’ are being misled and betrayed, they are accused of being ‘anti-Semitic’ and charged with ‘hate-crimes.’”

HR is of the opinion that if this is actual history, then so be it – it does not change God’s prophecy about the return of the Jews to their land and the creation of their state “in one day” (Isaiah 66:8). As a matter of fact, who can say that God didn’t use the provided piece of history to achieve the fulfilment of this prophecy? Remember, Satan cannot do anything if God doesn’t allow him to. God often allow the devil to exercise his evil plans and then turns it around and uses it for His own purposes and glory.

PROPHECIES AND THE FALL OF JERUSALEM IN 70 AD

According to them, the book of Revelation was not written about 95 or 96 AD, but written prior to the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD. They say that the prophesies of Isaiah, Joel and Daniel and of Jesus in Luke 21 and Matthew 24 therefore refer to the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD. They believe that their theory is backed by words such as “distant future” and “imminent” (going to happen “before the end of this [Jesus’] generation”). According to AWS there is nothing in the Bible, indicating that Christ will return to begin a one thousand-year reign upon a literal throne in the Middle East and save us from this evil world. AWS further mocks the idea of an Antichrist and the warnings against radio frequency identification (RFID) tags that could relate to “the mark of the beast.” AWS says, “Rather than recognizing typical metaphorical biblical prophesy of “the sun being darkened and the moon not giving light,” Sellers calls it, “A period of seven years of disaster that will end with Christ’s defeat of evil at Armageddon.”

They say that the “end of the age” referred to in Revelation and Matthew is the same as that spoken of in Daniel but it refers to the end of the old covenant between God and Israel, made with Abraham. According to them, the Apostle Paul was saying that this covenant had expired (Galatians 4:31-5:2), as Paul completed his mission to bring the word of God to “all the earth.” (Romans 10:18; Colossians 1:5-6; Titus 2:11).

AWS even tried to show a tie between the “sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind [that] filled all the house….and appeared unto them cloven tongues as of fire (Acts 2:2)” and “the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory….with a great sound of a trumpet (Matt. 24:30-31)” In HR’s opinion this is an excellent example of how Amills would go to any extremes in twisting holy Scripture to defend their unbiblical theology and eschatology.

Irenaeus (A.D. 180), a student of Polycarp (who was a disciple of the apostle John), wrote that the apocalyptic vision “was seen not very long ago, almost in our own generation, at the close of the reign of Domitian” (Against Heresies 30). The testimony of Irenaeus, not far removed from the apostolic age, is first rate. He places the book near the end of Domitian’s reign, and that ruler died in A.D. 96. Irenaeus seems to be unaware of any other view for the date of the book of Revelation.

Clement of Alexandria (A.D. 155-215) says that John returned from the isle of Patmos “after the tyrant was dead” (Who Is the Rich Man? 42), and Eusebius, known as the “Father of Church History,” identifies the “tyrant” as Domitian (Ecclesiastical History III.23).

Victorinus (late third century), author of the earliest commentary on the book of Revelation also agreed with the date of 95 / 96 AD.

The contents of the book of Revelation also suggest a late date, as the following observations indicate. The spiritual conditions of the churches described in Revelation chapters two and three more readily harmonize with the late date. The church in Ephesus, for instance, was not founded by Paul until the latter part of Claudius’s reign: and when he wrote to them from Rome, A.D. 61, instead of reproving them for any want of love, he commends their love and faith (Ephesians 1:15) (Horne 1841, 382).

NO GREAT TRIBULATION EXPECTED

AWS tells us that Daniel 9:24-27 refers to the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of Prince Titus in 70 AD. His “desolations” and the “tribulation” in Matthew 24:29 refer to the judgment of Judah (part of Israel) for persecuting the saints.

In Matthew 24:21 says, “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.” Many worse things happened in the world since the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD and what is described in Revelation 6-19 would make the 70 AD event look like a Sunday school picnic.

JESUS, THE “ANTICHRIST”

AWS makes a ridiculous remark about Daniel 9:27 which reads, “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease.” They say that the “he” in this verse refers to Christ when, after 3 1/2 years of ministry (midweek), he died on the cross and became the ultimate sacrifice.

If only AWS had read the previous verse (26) they would have noticed that the “he” is the “prince” to come to destroy, namely the Antichrist, Daniel 7:26 says, ““And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined.”

THE TERM “ANTICHRIST”

According to AWS, the term “antichrist” is only listed in the Bible three times (I John 2:18, I John 4:3 and II John:7). They therefore question the motive of Christians who “denounce and demonize” the United Nations, Europeans, Russia, Iraq, Muslims, the media, liberals, freethinkers and international bankers as those who will team up with the Antichrist. Furthermore, AWS clearly doesn’t understand the prophetic reference as they also argue that Babylon is already “a ruins.”

Although the Apostle John was the only Bible writer to use the name antichrist, he did not only used the word “antichrists” when he spoke about false prophets and teachers. 1 John 4:3 says, “And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming and is now already in the world.” In 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 the Antichrist is called the Man of Sin. Revelation 13:5-8 calls the Antichrist “the beast.” In Daniel’s prophetic vision of end days, he described the Antichrist as “a little horn” in chapters 7, 8 and 11.

But typically to the hypocrisy and “copy and paste” style of Amills , much later in their article, AWS change their tune and said, “the Zionism, Freemasonry, organized Jewry, Imperialism, Jesuits, Vatican, Intelligence agencies, mass media, etc. are among countless octopus arms. Its motive is to protect its priceless but fraudulent private monopoly over public (government) credit (money creation). It needs a ‘world government’ to protect its unlimited wealth and power. It’s ideology of world tyranny, Illuminism…. preaches that man (i.e. the bankers) can usurp the place of God and redefine truth,” destroying Christianity, nation-states and family by promoting homosexuality and promiscuity and the end of inheritance and private property. Christians must recognize that the teachings of Jesus have been subverted to suit the cause of a satanic cult determined to destroy civilization and institute a violent police state. It has banished God from public life and placed itself as the regent “governing authority” in top political seats and in church hierarchies worldwide.”

So what AWS is actually doing, is acknowledging that their will be an Antichrist system called “Babylon.” As long as we do not call it part of unfulfilled end time Bible prophecy!!

THE THIRD WORLD WAR

According to AWS, the third world war would be played out by stirring up hatred of the Muslim world for the purposes of playing the Islamic world and the Zionists against one another. While this is going on, the remaining nations would be forced to fight themselves into a state of mental, physical, spiritual and economic exhaustion. Organized Jewry and its Masonic allies are following this script, based on end times biblical prophesies. It calls for mass destruction of all people. The New World Order would then rise from the debris.

AWS says that the Cabalists (students of the Jewish Cabala) are the actual anti-Semites. Set up as scapegoats for the diabolical few, duped Jews cover for the Rothschilds, who have suppressed normal Jewish cultural/spiritual expression while hijacking the Jewish people via “anti-Semitism” into advancing their Illuminati banker plan for world government dictatorship.

Once again, we see the hypocrisy of the Amills. They disagree on the reality of an Antichrist with a “Babylonian” system, but that is exactly what AWS is describing here.

In addition, if the Cabalists are the actual anti-Semites, then Amills are indirectly advancing the course of the Cabalists!!

THE 144,000 “GOOD” CHRISTIANS

AWS mockingly refers to the 144,000 Jews in Revelation as the “good guys,” or “a phalanx of 144,000 Jews who accept Jesus.” They say that prominent Christian leaders condemned this story as “unscholarly” and a “perversion” of the Bible.

The fact that the 144,000 are specifically linked to the twelve tribes of Israel is never taken into consideration when Amills touch on this issue.

THE RAPTURE

AWS further says that John Nelson Darby created the idea of the rapture, and sarcastically refers to the rapture as the “two second comings of Christ.” AWS specifically rejects the fact that 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 refers to a rapture. They argue that Jesus’ prophesies and those of the Old Testament refer exclusively to the Jews of that day, for whom the resurrection was extremely important, not to the Gentiles at some indistinct future time. “Darby’s difficulty was solved by assuming that the Gospels were addressed partly to Jews and partly to Christians.”

AWS makes the statement that the popularity of dispensationalism and its corresponding “rapture” theory has declined sharply since the 1970’s due to what they call “notorious corruption in evangelical organizations and because many of today’s Christians recognize the “rapture” is not in the Bible.”

An in-depth study of Bible prophecy provides many indications of a rapture (but this is an entire subject on its own.) Amills hardly ever knowledge that the doctrine of the rapture is built on many other pieces of Scripture as well, other than 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17.

CONCLUSION

AWS ends its article with the following paragraph: “As Christians, we are obligated to research the origins of our beliefs; no longer can we accept—on faith alone—what we have been taught regarding end times theology. An Idaho Baptist elder recently said that we must change our hearts to be open to what God wants us to do; get quiet, away from life’s clutter as Jesus did and listen. Then act. We have something the NWO doesn’t have and that is Love. We must focus on that.”

From a Pre-millennial point of view, that is exactly what we are also pleading and praying for. The only thing I would like to add as part of my conclusion, is the fact that our love should also include a truth and a love for God’s Word, without adding to or taking away from it, the way Amills do.

It is interesting to see how Amills always blatantly ignores the detailed content of Romans 11, Zechariah 12-14, Joel 3 and many other prophetic passages which relate to God’s plan for the nation of Israel.

Furthermore, they never refer to Revelation 22, as it totally destroys their believe that the book of Revelation is not a prophetic book that relates to the second coming of Christ.

Let us refrain from the deception and propaganda spread by Amills. They are not seeking for truth, but only for the approval of their man made theologies.

Revelation 22:18-20

18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.”

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JERUSALEM

The important revelations to humankind through events in JERUSALEM will be resumed at the Second Coming of Christ.

JERUSALEM, WHERE GOD PUT HIS NAME ON

Almost a thousand years before Christ, king David conquered JERUSALEM from the Jebusites, moved to the new city from Hebron and declared it the capital of Israel. Three names were used for the city, i.e. ‘JERUSALEM’, ‘Zion’ and ‘the City of David’. ‘JERUSALEM’ means ‘Founded Peacefully’. God has chosen JERUSALEM as the city where He has put His name on forever.

David wanted to build a house for the Lord’s name in JERUSALEM, but God said that David’s son would do that (2 Samuel 7:12-13). After having built the temple, God said to Solomon: “And the LORD said to him: “I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built to put My name there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.” (1 Kings 9:3).

In 1 Kings 11:36 God once again said, “And to his son I will give one tribe, that My servant David may always have a lamp before Me in JERUSALEM, the city which I have chosen for Myself, to put My name there.” that JERUSALEM is “the city which I have chosen Me to put My name there.” Psalm 48:2 calls it “the city of the great King.”

HISTORY AFTER THE TEMPLE OF SOLOMON

Solomon built the first temple there and the glory of God entered it. God was worshipped in the temple and He revealed Himself to Israel through the service of the priests and prophets. As long as the people served God and obeyed His commandments, JERUSALEM would be a safe fortress.

However, times of spiritual decay set in, leading to the neglect of the temple service in JERUSALEM. A few God-fearing kings restored the temple service during their reign, after which decline only once again sets in. Due to the persistent apostasy of the nation and their leaders, the glory of God eventually departed from the temple and He surrendered them to their enemies. During the Babylonian siege in the 6th century BC, the city and the temple were plundered and destroyed and many of the Jews taken captive to Babylonia.

These events did not terminate God’s eternal commitment to JERUSALEM. After seventy years of captivity Israel was restored to their land, they rebuilt the temple and re-instituted the temple service. Then once again, apostasy set in, leading to the departure of the glory of the Lord. After Malachi, there was a four hundred year long ‘prophetic silence’ in Israel as God sent no prophets during this time. Relying only on their own strength, Israel could not prevail against their enemies. The temple became completely dilapidated and fell into ruins while spiritual darkness prevailed in Israel.

Since about 40 BC, Herod the Great ruled as king over Judea. To win the favour of the Jews, while also intending to suppress their messianic expectation, Herod built a new temple in JERUSALEM. This temple was known as the second temple and temple service was again instituted.

JERUSALEM AND THE FIRST COMING OF THE MESSIAH

By far the most significant revelation of God to Israel and the whole world was the birth of His Son, Jesus, from Jewish parents. In JERUSALEM Christ proclaimed the message of eternal life and taught in the temple. However, the majority of the leaders and inhabitants of the city rejected Christ. In doing so, they brought great sorrows and peril over themselves.

During the triumphal entry of Jesus into JERUSALEM, He was moved to tears because of the dire consequences of Israel’s spiritual blindness:
“Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” (Luke 19:41-44)

In a planned betrayal of Jesus He was falsely accused, arrested, tried and convicted innocently in JERUSALEM. The Jewish leaders insisted upon His crucifixion so strongly that the Roman governor, Pilate, conceded to their request for the sake of popularity among the Jews.

Christ was crucified just outside JERUSALEM in the stone-quarry of Solomon. Here He made atonement for our sins by paying the price for the transgressions of a lost humanity to God. He was buried outside the gates of JERUSALEM but rose from the dead three days later. On the Sunday of His resurrection He preached in JERUSALEM in what can be describes as the first service of the dispensation of the Christian church. A week later the second sermon was delivered (John 20:19-29). Just prior to His ascension from the Mount of Olives forty days after His resurrection, He gave the Great Commission to His disciples.

That ministry would only commence after something very important happened in JERUSALEM. Jesus said to them:
“ Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at JERUSALEM. And you are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of JERUSALEM until you are endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:46-49).

That was the promise of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit: “ But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in JERUSALEM, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). On the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out over the disciples, the process of world evangelism began. On that day, three thousand souls were saved and became members of the church of Christ in JERUSALEM.

From that day onwards, the gospel of salvation would be preached in JERUSALEM and beyond, even to the uttermost ends of the earth.

THE CONTINUED ROLE OF JERUSALEM

Many people, especially those who follow Covenant theology (just another form of Replacement theology) argue that the divine purpose of JERUSALEM expired with the moving out of the disciples to preach the gospel in the rest of the world. They conveniently forget about God’s decision that His name would forever dwell in JERUSALEM. The long-term future of JERUSALEM was always, still is, and always will be securely fixed in the divine counsel and purposes of God.

To clarify this issue, we only need to study the Olivet discourse of Christ where He discussed the first and last generations of the present dispensation of grace between His first and second coming. Both these generations are identified in terms of events that have occurred (or will in future occur) in and around JERUSALEM.

The first generation started when the inhabitants of JERUSALEM rejected Jesus as their Messiah. It ended with the destruction of JERUSALEM by the Romans in 70 AD. After that, Israel was dispersed among the nations (the Diaspora).

During the times of the Gentiles (of unspecified duration) JERUSALEM is trodden down by the Gentiles while the gospel message is preached to all the nations on earth.

The last generation started with the restoration of Israel as a nation in 1948 and when Israel captured the Old City of JERUSALEM from Jordan during the Six-Day war in 1967. It will end when the Christ comes back to the Mount of Olives in JERUSALEM and the remnant of Israel accepts Him as their Messiah.

Regarding His rejection by the spiritually blinded Jewish leaders during the first generation of the dispensation of grace, Jesus said the following to them:
“Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt.… that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. “O JERUSALEM, JERUSALEM, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’” (Matthew 23:32, 35-39).

The generation referred to by Christ includes the people who were alive when He made this pronouncement. Within the life-span of most of them, the prophecies about the destruction of JERUSALEM were fulfilled. Luke described the destruction of JERUSALEM and the dispersion of Israel as follows:
“But when you see JERUSALEM surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And JERUSALEM will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” (Luke 21:20-24).
The first generation began with the rejection and crucifixion of Israel’s Messiah in JERUSALEM, and was terminated by the destruction of JERUSALEM. That was followed by the long Diaspora of Israel, during which time JERUSALEM was trodden down by the Gentiles. At the end of the time of world evangelism, when the gentiles had the opportunity to enter the kingdom of heaven, Israel, their land and their city JERUSALEM will again be restored. Physical restoration has already started in 1948 and spiritual restoration will take place during Daniel’s 70th week, also known as the time of Jacob’s trouble.

Paul wrote, For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob.” (Romans 11:25-26).

Before their national spiritual revival will occur, a time of severe testing and affliction awaits the restored Israel in their land, and particularly also in the city of JERUSALEM:
“Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Because you have all become dross, therefore behold, I will gather you into the midst of JERUSALEM. As men gather silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin into the midst of a furnace, to blow fire on it, to melt it; so I will gather you in My anger and in My fury, and I will leave you there and melt you.” (Ezekiel 22:19-20).

The time of Jacob’s trouble, which is aimed at the spiritual revival of a remnant in Israel, form part of the events of the last generation of the present dispensation, at the end of which the Messiah will come back. This will be the time of Israel’s testing. Jeremiah says: “Alas! For that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it” (Jeremiah 30:7).

THE 70TH YEAR-WEEK

The last seven years of the last generation are described as the 70th year-week of Daniel (Daniel 9:24-27). That will be the tribulation period under the reign of the false messiah (Antichrist). Shortly after his revelation he will authorise the building of the third temple in JERUSALEM. In the middle of the seven year period he will declare himself to be God in the rebuilt temple, defile the sanctuary by having an image of himself placed there, and command all people to worship the image (Daniel 9:27; 2 Thessalonians 2:4; Revelation 13:14-15). Israel will be severely shocked and disillusioned when they realise that they accepted and worshipped a false messiah. They will break their covenant with him and flee to the wilderness. The ensuing 3½ years are described as the great tribulation (Matthew 14:15-22). God says: “…in their affliction they will seek Me early” (Hosea 5:15).

The Antichrist will be aware of the fact that the true Messiah will return to JERUSALEM at the end of the tribulation period of seven years, and for that reason he will deploy a multi-national military force in Israel to fight against Him. The Antichrist and his forces will be utterly defeated and destroyed on that day (Revelation 19:19-21).

JERUSALEM AND THE SECOND COMING OF THE MESSIAH

All nations will be gathered against JERUSALEM on the day of the Second Coming.
“Behold, I will make JERUSALEM a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and JERUSALEM. And it shall happen in that day that I will make JERUSALEM a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it. In that day,” says the LORD, “I will strike every horse with confusion, and its rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of JERUSALEM are my strength in the LORD of hosts, their God.’” (Zechariah 12:2-5)

The remnant of Israel will also know from biblical prophecies that the Messiah will come to JERUSALEM to save them. During the siege of JERUSALEM they will go the Mount of Olives at the risk of their lives to await the arrival of Messiah:
“And His feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before JERUSALEM on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal: Yes, ye shall flee as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with Thee… And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from JERUSALEM; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder seas; in summer and in winter shall it be. And the LORD shall be King over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and His Name one…. And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against JERUSALEM shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles” (Zechariah 14:4-5, 8-9, 16).

Daniel says there will come a time for the people of Israel and the city of JERUSALEM “to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy” (Daniel 9:24). That time is fast approaching and will dawn at the end of the 70th year-week. Then the whole remnant of Israel will be reconciled with the Messiah and all of them will serve Him wholeheartedly:
“But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” (Jeremiah 31:33-34).

There will be a moving reunion between Israel and their Messiah when they say to Him: “Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord.” That will only happen after the Holy Spirit has been poured out over the people of Israel who humbled themselves before the Lord:
“And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of JERUSALEM, the Spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn… In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of JERUSALEM for sin and for uncleanness… they shall call on My name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is My people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God” (Zechariah 12:10, 13:1, 9).

After Israel has been reconciled with Christ, He will also restore the throne of David in JERUSALEM. Then, the promise will be fulfilled which the angel made to Mary before the birth of Jesus: “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.” (Luke 1:32). Jesus never ruled from the throne of David, but after His Second Coming this promise will be fulfilled:
“After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof; and I will set it up: that the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my Name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things” (Acts 15:16-17; compare Amos 9:11-12 and Isaiah 16:5).

JERUSALEM AS WORLD CAPITAL

JERUSALEM will be made capital of the whole world. The Lord Jesus will be the King of kings and lasting peace will prevail everywhere:
“Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from JERUSALEM. He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:3-4).

“At that time JERUSALEM shall be called The Throne of the LORD, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to JERUSALEM. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts.” (Jeremiah 3:17).

Satan will be bound during the millennial reign of Christ and consequently be unable to deceive the nations into hating and fighting one another (Revelation 20:2-3). They will seek the favour of the Lord in JERUSALEM and also honour His people, Israel:
“Yes, many peoples and strong nations Shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in JERUSALEM, And to pray before the LORD.’ “Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” (Zechariah 8:22-23).

In the coming dispensation, JERUSALEM will be a city of brilliance and glory. Every child of God should earnestly look forward to this time of divine harmony and peace on earth when JERUSALEM will rise from the ashes of shame and deprivation:
“Awake, awake! Put on your strength, O Zion; Put on your beautiful garments, O JERUSALEM, the holy city! For the uncircumcised and the unclean Shall no longer come to you.” (Isaiah 52:1).

“Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see JERUSALEM a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken. But there the glorious LORD will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams… For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us” (Isaiah 33:20-22).

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and the kings to the brightness of thy rising… thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. For the nation and the kingdom that will not serve thee shall persih; yea those nations shall be utterly wasted… The sons of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel… Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise” (Isaiah 60:3, 11-12, 14, 18).

Because JERUSALEM will be a blessing to the whole world after the Second Coming of Christ and the setting up of His millennial reign, we should join Isaiah in exclaiming: “For Zion’s sake I will not hold my peace, and for JERUSALEM’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth” (Isaiah 62:1).

PRAY FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM

In these dark days of hostility and attacks against the City of God, we should constantly remind the Lord of His promises to bless JERUSALEM. He commanded us to intercede for JERUSALEM:
“I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O JERUSALEM, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence, and give Him no rest, till He establish, and till He make JERUSALEM a praise in the earth” (Isaiah 62:6-7).

We should never forget JERUSALEM as a place of divine revelation – not its past, neither its wonderful future. David said: “Pray for the peace of JERUSALEM: they shall prosper that love thee” (Psalm 122:6). The struggle for the control of JERUSALEM is a struggle between light and darkness. The Lord Jesus will return to JERUSALEM and rule the world from this city. That is why the kingdom of darkness does everything in its power to conquer JERUSALEM or to estrange it from Israel with a view to converting it into a heathen city.

Let us pray for the peace of JERUSALEM in the words and in the deep longing of the Jewish captives at the rivers of Babylon: “If I forget thee, O JERUSALEM, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not JERUSALEM above my chief joy” (Psalm 137:5-6).

With inhabitants such as these during the coming millennium, ruled by the Messiah Himself, JERUSALEM will indeed be a blessing to the whole world.

THE NEW JERUSALEM

In the future creation of God there will be a new JERUSALEM in which all the saved ones will dwell. The apostle John said:
“Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” (Revelation 21:1-5).
Be sure that you are born again and by virtue of that a member of the bride of Jesus Christ and a future resident of the new JERUSALEM. You will then share in the eternal glory and joys of the kingdom of God. The great deeds of God’s salvation that were done and revealed in earthly JERUSALEM should be proclaimed in the whole world as that is the only doorway to heavenly JERUSALEM.

SIGNS OF THE SEASON

First, I would like to welcome and thank every one of you who has subscribed to the blog. Let us give glory to God, as there suddenly seem to be some good growth in the number of subscribers. While we await the return of Christ, we need to occupy and be about our Father’s business.

I am sharing another except from the first draft of my forthcoming book, “ON THAT DAY … LEAST EXPECTED.” Please note that quite a number of changes may still be required.

Matthew 24:36 tells us that nobody knows the exact day or the hour of the Second Coming, but then in Mathew 24:42 we are warned to be watchful. In Mark 13:37 we also read, “And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!” Throughout Scripture, God gave us many “clues” and signs. Luke 21:28 says, “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

Since the ascension of Christ, all or most generations saw some or many of these signs. It is however important to note that these signs are like birth pangs, continuously increasing in both intensity and frequency.

The sudden increase in earthquakes serves as an excellent example. According to an article published in the LA Times on 2 June 2014, a U.S. Geological Survey has studied the increase in earthquakes larger than 3.0 in the central and eastern United States in recent years. There have been more than 100 such earthquakes a year on average in the last four years of their study, up from 20 a year between 1970 to 2000.

Unfortunately, both the KJV and the NKJV translated “birth pangs” in the Greek Scripture, to “sorrows” in Matthew 24:8.

From A.W. Pink’s Studies in the Scriptures – 1922-23, Volume 1 of 17 we quote, “In the 4th chapter of this prophet (Jeremiah) there is a vivid description of the fearful afflictions which shall come upon the inhabitants of Palestine. Doubtless, what is there said received a tragic fulfillment in the past. But like most, if not all prophecy, this one will receive a later and final accomplishment. There are several statements found in it which indicate that it treats of the End-time. The plainest of these is found in the closing verse, where we read, “For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her which bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion.” It is the “birth-pangs” of Matt.24:8 (see Greek) which is in view.” End quote.

We are briefly looking at some of the most obvious signs of the end times.

1) Changes towards a new world order

The signs of decay and collapse of the existing world order cover a broad spectrum and affect all walks of life:
– Religious decay is responsible for the increased darkening of peoples’ minds, immorality and spiritual confusion.
– Social decay is seen in disintegrating social structures and the breakdown of marriages and the family values.
– Economic decay is evident in collapsing economies, poverty, unemployment, and rampant inflation.
– Political decay is seen in the acceptance of humanistic constitutions, anarchy, chaos, protests and violence.

The new world order will constitute the framework for the Babylonian system of the Antichrist described in the book of Revelation. It will consist of a one-world religion, a one-world society, a one-world economy, and a one-world government:
– Religious unity will be based on the deceptive idea that all religions worship the same God. This is already happening, with the Roman Catholic pope, Francis behind the steering wheel.
– Social unity among the internationalised planetary citizens will give further expression to the ideology of globalism. The worldwide reaction on social media to Donald Trump’s acceptance of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel serves as a good example.
– A centralised cashless economy will be established in which RFID chips and PIN numbers for all electronic funds transfer will be issued. Without the mark of the beast, nobody would later be able to buy or to sell.
– Political unity in the form of a world government and a global peace-keeping force will emerge. The “Climate change” summits provide a good opportunity while members of the Untied Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) are losing their identity as sovereign countries. The EU is already working towards a single army for Europe.

This means that the world will be united in the political, religious and economic arenas under the leadership of the Antichrist. The world empire of the Antichrist is monism, which means everything is one.

A united world

Unity must first be established in the world by building bridges and eradicating boundaries in all spheres of life. The ecumenical movement promotes religious unity. Once you have changed people’s believe systems the rest is almost guarantee to follow. Social unity is built where people are non-sexist, non-racial, multi-religious, and multi-cultural. Political and economical power is internationalized which will ultimately lead to the founding of a one-world government and a global monetary system. These building-blocks of the new world order are regarded as critically important for the achieving of a false sense of harmony and peace, and consequently also for the emergence of the long-expected Utopia on earth.

These reforms would lay the foundation for the Antichrist to appear on the scene as a political world leader, a universal religious messiah, and the head of a world economy. In preparing the way, the false prophet would play a major role to obtain the buy-in from politicians, bankers, church leaders and other relative parties.

Cosmic unity

For the further development of man to higher levels of divinity, they would seek to make contact with spiritual entities and forces in the cosmos. People must be taught how to contact spirit-guides and masters of wisdom in cosmic spheres. Apart from spiritism and other techniques, transcendental meditation (TM) is regarded as one of the most effective methods of achieving an alternative state of consciousness and of becoming one with the cosmic world.

The false prophet will be highly exalted in the hierarchy of cosmic masters of wisdom. He will occupy the “right hand seat” of the Antichrist, and be able to perform amazing signs and wonders. He will even make fire come down from heaven and, according to Revelation 13:14, this sign will eventually deceive the nations into worshipping the Antichrist.

The role of Europe and the elite

The Antichrist will almost certainly rise from Europe from where he will initially rule the entire world before he eventually moves his headquarters to Israel. The Czech president Vaklav Hoval said in a major article written for U.S. News and World Report in 1990, that “Europe has been the cradle of a civilization that has shaped the history of the world for the last two thousand years. The spiritual impulses of antiquity Judaism and Christianity merged into a force that has forged the world as we know it. European civilization discovered, explored, conquered and dominated other continents and other civilizations. It has brought European thinking, enterprise and inventions to the remotest corners of the earth.”

Europe colonized the globe and the unified Europe leads to a unified world. European culture and apostate Christianity have simultaneously spread to the colonized countries. A worldwide foundation was laid to quite easily link the entire world back to Rome.

The revival of the old Roman Empire began with uniting Europe and the European Union is evident thereof. Eastern Europe was democratized and became a partner with Western Europe. Catholic popes first begged for a united Europe and now for world unity.

Trade agreements also linked Europe to other continents and countries across the globe, such as America, Canada, Japan, Asia and Africa. We see the unity between world leaders who participate in organizations such as NATO and the United Nations. This paves the way for the global political and economical system of the Antichrist.

To assist in Satan’s evil plan, the elite play a major role. An elite group of wealthy globalists and their interlocking network of transnational corporations, international banks, government agencies, foundations, and secret organizations are working to create a global government, cashless society, and universal religion as predicted in Scripture. These include people like George Soros, the Rothschilds and the Rockefellers. In general, globalism creates goals in the corporate environment. Academic then provides studies and white papers to justify these corporate goals. Political players sell the arguments of the academic to the public and if necessary, change laws to accommodate and facilitate Corporate in getting what it wants. Organized religion along with church and state secures corporate, academic and political rule into a global order.

Curriculums are changed in schools and God is no longer welcome. Parents no longer have the right to discipline their children and court cases are made against businesses who insist on maintaining Christian values. These globalists are often behind wars, riots, and protests, in the way they are currently using liberals, abortions, homosexuality, and racism in America and elsewhere in the world. Behind closed doors they discuss their plans at Bilderberg conferences. Themes such as climate change, aliens from outer space and more are being used to cause fear and give an excuse to draw world leaders and powers together. By creating chaos, the world is certainly looking for a leader to rise to solve the world’s problems.

When the chaos gets real bad and there are no answers and solutions left, the perfect conditions are set for the Antichrist to be revealed and be empowered by Satan. People will be willing to throw away their democracy and their freedoms just for peace. He will have great authority. The world will give him all of the authority he needs. As soon as the Church is taken out of this world, it will most likely be in a time of great chaos.

2) Falling away – Apostasy, false teachers and false prophets

The Bible tells us that there will be a great apostasy during the end times. The KJV calls it the “falling away,” while the ESV calls it “the rebellion.” That is what an apostasy is: a rebellion and an abandonment of the truth. The end times will include a large-scale rejection of God’s Word and even of God’s existence. Many warnings are given in the Bible against false doctrines, teachers, prophets and even false christs in the latter days.

Describing this aspect of apostasy and its underlying danger, A. W. Tozer wrote, “So skilled is error at imitating truth, that the two are constantly being mistaken for each another. It takes a sharp eye these days to know which brother is Cain and which is Abel.”

“Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4)

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared” (1 Timothy 4:1-2)

““But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived… having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” (2 Timothy 3:1,5)

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

“Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.” (1 John 2:18-19)

Televangelists, the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), Bethel Church and others, mainly in the Charismatic Movement, who preach the Prosperity gospel, are all good examples of apostasy in the days we are living in. They run their ministries for personal gain and unfortunately often rob those who are already in financial difficulties or in despair while giving them false hope.

But they are not the only ones in err, as there are also false doctrines being preached in other denominations. These teachings include, but are not limited to, conditional salvation, grace and faith plus works, partial or no rapture, and others by which they steal the joy and certainty of believers’ salvation or their blessed hope. Their objective is to imprison believers within boundaries of rules they themselves are not able to follow (Read Colossians 2:8-23 for Paul’s opinion on modern day legalists).

Another category are those who either treat the prophecies of our time as if they were already accomplished in history, or they give the prophecies an unbiblical allegorical meaning. They expect believers to trust in their superior intellect or advanced education instead of what the Bible teaches.

Signs and wonders

Churches and Christians who place a heavy emphasis on signs and wonders are playing perfectly in the hands of the false prophet as described in Revelation 13. Signs performed by false teachers and unbiblical prophecies by false prophets are greatly on the increase and being used as a tool for mass deception. This reminds of a warning in Deuteronomy 13:1-3:

“If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying: Let us go after other gods – which you have not known – and let us serve them, you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Religious deception is wilful rebellion against God and all false prophets, teachers and their deceived victims are heading for eternal damnation in the Lake of Fire. Many of the Charismatic churches are performing these signs and wonders under the influence of deceiving spirits. They have “departed from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons” (1 Timonthy 4:1). Before the Great White Throne, they will in vain glory in their false ministries on the final day, but Christ will reply to them: “I never knew you; depart from Me…” (Matthew 7:23).

Take heed that signs and wonders do not replace the Word of God! Also beware of the so-called signs and wonders conferences and spectaculars. Satan is increasingly going to concentrate on signs and wonders and will use every available demon in his kingdom to this end. Because the Antichrist will get the credit for the greatest signs, wonders and manifestations of power, the whole world will marvel and follow him, saying: “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” (Revelation 13:4).

The Emerging Church

One of the driving forces of the emerging church movement is a market driven strategy, similar to that used in a business. They identify the wants and needs of their target “customers” and adapt themselves accordingly.

The religious organization identifies the needs of our self-centred, self-sufficient generation, removes the focus away from Christ, and put it on the congregation. Entertainment replaces worship, philosophy replaces theology, and good works replaces holy living.

Borrowing a phrase from Dominion Theology they call it “bringing Heaven to Earth” to make it sounds more appealing to their target market. Little do their followers realize that for believers, these “good works” will be burned up in the fire (1 Corinthians 3:14-15), and for unbelievers they will be insufficient to enter into the kingdom (John 3:3). Commenting on their works in the letter to Laodicea, Jesus said, “I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16) They are excited about the great entertainment, the motivational talk and the good works, but they know little about God.

During the last couple of years, they drew many who had become bored with traditional Church and wanted a place where they could “feel good” and do good with no messages about sin and repentance.

Christ said the true Church would become weaker and less influential as the end approaches (Revelation 3:8). As the world moves further and further away from God, those of us who follow Him will naturally feel less comfortable and less welcome in most churches today. Our citizenship is in Heaven (Philippians 3:20) and we look for a city whose architect and builder is God (Hebrews 11:10).

In the meantime, we have to stop depending on organized religion to meet our needs as the gulf between religion and the Church is growing wider by the day. In many instances, the real Church is even being forced underground.

If you cannot find a God worshiping, Bible teaching church where you live, do not settle for whatever is available to you. Gather a small group of like-minded believers and worship at home. Paul and Timothy did not have a huge bureaucracy behind them. They did not have million dollar buildings or professionally designed programs. They did not even have the New Testament. Yet they found a way to worship God and to help others do the same.

Stop supporting churches and groups who are trying to bring “Heaven to Earth” and store for yourself treasures to Heaven. Also dig into prophecy. It is the single biggest topic in the Bible and be prepared like the five wise virgins.

Seven churches of revelation (Revelation 2-3)

Even in our traditional churches we see decay and a lack of discipline, faith and holiness. It is therefore always wise to be reminded of the messages from Christ, to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3.

a) Ephesus – The loveless church (Revelation 2:1-7)

The church of Ephesus had many positive qualities and Christ commended them on their dedication, determination, discipline, and discernment. (Revelation 2:2-3).

Revelation 2:4 however reveals that the church looked good on the outside, but inwardly they lost their love for Christ. “Nevertheless, I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen” (Revelation 2:5). They needed to remember where they started and to repent and “… do the first works.” Often we are so busy with the things of God, that we actually forget about the God of these things.

b) Smyrna – The suffering church (Revelation 2:8-11)

There are churches in the world where persecution is a daily reality. The ancient church in Smyrna suffered because of pressure, poverty, and persecution (Revelation 2:9). Christians should be prepared for what might come as we see how God is being kicked out at schools, universities, by governments and more.

“Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer” (Revelation 2:10). Paul wrote that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:35-39). Fear is a natural human response, but we live supernatural lives through the power of Christ in us.

“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).

c) Pergamos – The compromising church (Revelation 2:12-17)

Pergamos was nicknamed “Satan’s City.” The Christians in Pergamos were surrounded by pagan beliefs and practices and in spite of their faithfulness in some areas, they compromised their faith in others. They allowed idolatry to creep into their congregation.

We need to guard against the dilution of true doctrine by false teaching and authoritarian leaders.

d) Thyatira – The adulterous church (Revelation 2:18-29)

There are Christians and churches today who feel a need to be all-inclusive when it comes to spiritual and moral boundaries. The ancient church in Thyatira also allowed an immoral individual to lead many others away from Christ (Revelation 2:20).

When the prophetess refused the chance to repent, Christ warned of His judgement: “Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed.” (Revelation 2:22) This warning is not just to the prophetess but also to “those who commit adultery with her.” (Revelation 2:22-23) They would find themselves in “great tribulation” unless they repented of their immorality.

God is holy and will not abide rebellion forever. As Hebrews 10:31 says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

To those who distance themselves from the adultery, Christ said, “Hold fast what you have till I come” (Revelation 25.) He basically promised that they would be raptured.

e) Sardis — The dead church (Revelation 3:1-6)

This church received no commendations and Christ begins immediately with a denunciation. “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” The church today is also full of Christians in name only.

Christ gave five specific directions for the dead church.
– Be sensitive to the inroads of Sin in the church (Revelation3:2)
– Be supportive of those who remain true to Christ in the church(Revelation3:2,4)
– Be submissive to the control of the Holy Spirit in the church (Revelation3:3)
– Be subject to the authority of God’s Word in the church (Revelation3:3)
– Repent for the sin of the Church (Revelation3:3)
There is hope for those that do what Christ has directed. He promises eternal life for those that repent and submit to Him (Revelation 3:5).

f) Philadelphia – The faithful church (Revelation 3:7-13)

Christ commended the church in Philadelphia as they had an open door, they had a little strength (and depended on His strength), they have kept the Word of God, and they did not deny God.

g) Laodicea — The lukewarm church (Revelation 3:14-22)

The church in Laodicea was lacking in every way. It was a compromising, conceited, and Christless church and Christ said He would spew them from His mouth (Revelation 3:16). Today, many churches are in exactly the same boat.

The Laodiceans were rich, but their riches were worldly, not spiritual. They needed spiritual wealth which can only come through Christ (Revelation 3:18).

Nakedness in Scripture is a metaphor for defeat and humiliation, therefore Christ counsels them to procure “white garments” from Him that the shame of their nakedness might be covered (Revelation 3:18).

Christ still invites those who are living without Him in this late hour: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20). There will come a time when it would be too late to turn around. As we read in Isaiah 55:6, “Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.”

3) Perilous Times and Perilous Men

“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

We only need to look around us to recognize how society has changed, especially over the last couple of years. Things such as lawlessness, violence, corruption, the lack of discipline in schools and even in churches have become part of daily living. Young children are exposed to pornography and the Illuminate on television and on the internet. The roles of men and women are no longer according to God’s ordained will and the list goes on and on.

It is interesting to note that all of the things Paul mentioned in essence link back to the very first thing on his list. People have become lovers of self and the love of many grew cold (Matthew 24:12).

Though this may not appear to be such a huge issue at first sight, one only need to look at the number of photos some people post of themselves on social media since the invention of “selfies.” Even worse, shamelessness and the nakedness are often exposed.

Paul did not merely describe the unbelieving world, as he said that these people have a form of godliness but deny its power. He spoke about those who are only Christians by name, living lives indistinguishable from unbelievers, grabbing all they can get from the material world, while contributing little or nothing to the work of the Kingdom.

Paul has not been blind to the behaviour of these people, nor was this the only time he warned us to stay away from them. This is what he said in 1 Corinthians 5:9-11.

“ I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people – not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.”

Church discipline seems to become something of the past, even in most of the well-established denominations (Matthew 18:15–17).

Sadly, many self-professing Christians today also hide behind the excuse of “don’t judge me” to condemn those who correct them, while deep down inside they know that they are in conflict with God’s Word. The Bible does not teach us not to judge, but to judge fairly. In John 7:24 Christ said, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

We need to be discerning (Colossians 1:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:21) and speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Scripture actually instructs us to gently confront erring brothers or sisters in Christ (Galatians 6:1).

In addition, Christians and churches often defend unbelievers and organisations such as Planned Parenthood and the LGBT, which are an abomination to God.

There are numerous warnings against such practice. In Psalm 1:1 we read, “Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful” 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?”

Isaiah 5:20 gives us a stern warning, “ Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

4) Anti-Semitism and Jerusalem, becoming a heavy stone

The United Nations and Israel

“Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah. On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it.” (Zechariah 12:2-3)

Zechariah makes it clear that Jerusalem would be a burdensome stone for the nations. Although the passage actually relates to the very end of the Great tribulation, this is nothing new in the times we live in. The large number of resolution passed against Israel by the United Nations (UN) is absolutely irrational to say the least. Most of these resolutions, relate to Jerusalem. The anger of the entire world, after the American president, Donald Trump, declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December 2017, provides a very good example. While the UN turned a blind eye to war-torn countries such as Syria and Yemen, they repeatedly questioned Israel’s rights to defend itself against Hamas terrorists on the Gaza border in April 2018, shortly before the 70th celebration of Israel as an independent state.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, commonly known as BDS, says its objective is to utilize international pressure to end what it describes as “Israeli apartheid and its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands” and dismantling the security barrier separating Israel and the West Bank. Many Jewish and Israeli leaders see the effort as a discriminatory attempt to undermine Israel’s legitimacy as a Jewish state. The BDS operates from countries such as South Africa, Italy, France, and Chile.

Arabs, Muslims, and Palestinians

Many Arab countries make no secret that their goal is to sweep Israel and the Jews off the face of the earth. So-called Palestinians do not want a two-state solution; they are seeking to have all of Israel. The “holy” book of Islam, the Quran also instructs Muslims to go out and kill Jews (and Christians). Israel’s main enemy is Iran, who is the biggest funder of terrorism in the Middle East today. We are witnessing the aligning of the satanic front that will attack Israel during the Gog and Magog battle of Ezekiel 38. The presence of Russia, Iran, and Turkey in Syria, on the Golan Heights border of Israel provides more than adequate evidence of the times we are living in.

Replacement theology

Although the intention with Replacement theology may not be anti-Semitic according to those who practice it, it does have a very negative impact on the attitude of many Christians towards Israel and the Jews as we discussed in detail in section A.

In 1948, Israel was recognized as a sovereign state, essentially for the first time since AD 70. God promised Abraham that his posterity would have Canaan as “an everlasting possession” (Genesis 17:8), and Ezekiel prophesied a physical and spiritual resuscitation of Israel (Ezekiel 37). Having Israel as a nation in its own land is important in light of end-times prophecy because of Israel’s prominence in any biblical eschatology (Daniel 10:14; 11:41; Revelation 11:8).

5) Peace, safety and security

“While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.” (1 Thessalonians 5:3)

While the world is in chaos, world leaders often refer to “peace and safety” or “peace and security.” However, in most instances, this is a false sense of peace, created by the elite. The best example is the obsession of the world to seek for peace between Israel and the so-called “Palestinians.” Daniel 9:27 indicates that the 70th week of Daniel would officially start, once a peace treaty that involves the Antichrist is signed with many.

In a world, desperately looking for real peace, safety, and security, the Antichrist is going to be be well accepted once he is revealed.

6) Scoffers questioning the coming of Christ

The word scoffer denotes a person who is engaged in the act of jeering, scorning, or mocking. Sadly, many Christians also partake in mocking the possible soon return of Christ. They rely on human wisdom as evidence to the contrary. These are normally the lukewarm and those who find it hard to let go of the things of this world. In fact, they are following their own sinful desires.

“knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” (2 Peter 3:3-4)

“how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts.” (Jude 18)

As mentioned earlier, these scoffers do not realize that the signs are like birth pangs, continuously increasing in intensity and frequency.

Sadly, there are also Christians who do believe in a Second Coming, but they use every attempt to steal the blessed hope from those who believe in the rapture of the Church.

7) The Olivet discourse of Jesus

Earlier on, in section A, we saw that the disciples asked three questions to Christ in Matthew 24 , of which the answer to the first question was discussed. Now we are looking at Christ’s answers to questions 2 and 3.
Question 2: What will be the sign of your (2nd) coming?
Question 3: What will be the sign of the coming of the End of the Age?

In Matthew 24:4-8 He tells us what would be the signs just before and during the tribulation. Note that Matthew 24:8 ended with, “All these are the beginning of sorrows (or birth pangs).”

“And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in diverse places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”

As mentioned earlier, the correct translation of the Greek phrase archē ōdin (ἀρχή ὠδίν) is actually “the beginning of birth pangs.” The meaning of the phrase, translated in the KJV and the NKJV as “the beginning of sorrows” is therefore a direct reference to preliminary birth pangs that would increase to full-scale contractions and travail, which eventually leads to birth.

The Church Age would be characterized by the appearance of false messiahs, conflict between nations, natural disasters, famine, pestilence and great signs from heaven (Luke 21:11).

Jesus was simultaneously pointing his disciples to key passages from the prophet Isaiah. The first passage is in Isaiah 26, a portion of Scripture found in what is sometimes referred to as “Isaiah’s little apocalypse.” In Isaiah 26:16-18, we read that the expected “birth” of deliverance, redemption, and resurrection of Israel has not taken place yet, despite having endured the great suffering of labour:

“O LORD, they sought you in distress; they could only whisper a prayer, your chastening was upon them. As the pregnant woman approaches the time to give birth, she writhes and cries out in her labor pains, thus were we before you, O LORD. We were pregnant, we writhed in labor, we gave birth, as it seems, only to wind. We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth, nor were inhabitants of the world born.” (Isaiah 26:16-18)

The comparison to birth pains reveals that while these events would occur all through the Church Age, they would increase in frequency and intensity as the end draws nearer.

“THEN you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:9-14)

Matthew 24:4-14 provides an overview of the End Times that cover the period from the beginning of the birth pangs to the Second Coming.

Although believers were persecuted throughout the Church Age, persecution will become severe and even unbearable at the end. Therefore, the love of many will grow cold and they will leave the faith.

The fig tree – The generation

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see ALL these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. (Matthew 24:32-36)

These things did not happen during the lifespan of people alive in the days of Christ during His First Coming. Obviously, He referred to some future generation. He was telling the people on earth at the time of the end of the Age that when they see all these things begin to happen, including the Antichrist making his appearance in the temple, that they will enter the Great Tribulation and not escape from it. Once the signs begin to be observed, the the Second Coming and the judgement will occur within that last generation.

Jesus reinforced this meaning with a parable in Matthew 24:32–33: “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.” A sure sign of summer is the leafing of the fig tree while a sure sign of the end of the world is that “all these things” are taking place. Those who were not raptured and are on the earth by then will only have a short time left.

Another interpretation is that the prophecy in Matthew 24 has a “double fulfilment.” In this view, it also refers to the people alive in the days during the First Coming of Christ. So, when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in AD 70, the prophecy was fulfilled in part and the fall of Jerusalem provided a foretaste of worse things to come. However, many aspects of the entire prophecy did not occur in AD 70.

THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT

I am now in the last few chapters of my forthcoming book, “ON THAT DAY … LEAST EXPECTED” and though I’ll share another except with you. If only unbelievers would realize what a dreadful eternity is awaiting them if they do not repent …

Jesus often referred to the eternal death of the wicked (Matthew 10:28; Matthew 13:40-42; Matthew 25:41, 46).

Sheol / Hades

Sheol is the Hebrew equivalent of a New Testament term Hades. All of the ungodly who died, as from the time of Adam until today, are right now in Hades or Sheol, in their eternal souls until their resurrection. Hades is rather a state where souls suffer than a place. But Hades is a temporary time and “place” of torment as we see in Luke 16:19–31 which tells of the relationship, during life and after death, between an unnamed rich man and a poor beggar named Lazarus.

In Revelation 20:13-14 death and Hades give up the dead as they go out of existence and the ungodly is thrown into the lake of fire.

In Hades the suffering is of the soul, but in hell it is even worse as the suffering soul will be in a resurrected body, fitted for eternal hell. Even those bodies in the sea will also be raised.

Timing of the judgement

2 Peter 3:8 says “But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. ” This is the very last bit of the period known as “The Day of the Lord.” We saw God’s wrath and judgements up to the end of the Great Tribulation. Then we had the thousand year pause during the Millennial Kingdom. Now the final judgement of the ungodly takes place.

In Revelation 20:5 it is said that the ungodly would not be resurrected until the end of the thousand years. “But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished…”

In Isaiah 30:30 the prophet said, “The Lord will cause His voice of authority to be heard and the descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger and in the flame of a consuming fire.” God is coming in the judgment of fire.

The Great White Throne

After the Millennial Kingdom and Satan’s final rebellion against God, the Great White Throne will appear in heaven to judge the ungodly. Revelation 20:11 starts by saying, “ Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it”

Almost fifty times in the book of Revelation we find the mentioning of thrones. Throughout the book of Revelation God is the one sitting on the throne. But this is a throne of judgment and not the throne of heaven described in Revelation 4. It almost seems to be some specific judgment throne set up in the unseen realm and it is the final place of reckoning.

Psalm 9:7 says, “The Lord abides forever, He has established His throne for judgment and He will judge the world in righteousness, He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.”

Involvement of the Father and the Son

In John 5:22 we read, “For not even the Father judges anyone but He has given all judgment to the Son.” He continues in John 5:26, “Just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself and He gave Him authority to execute judgment because He is the Son of Man.” Christ says in John 8:50, “I do not seek My glory, there is one who seeks and judges.” That would of course be God His Father.

But then in Revelation 3:21 it says, “He who overcomes I will grant to sit down with Me on My throne as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”

Where God sits in judgment and in sovereignty, Christ sits there too. Remember in John 10:30 Christ said, “I and the Father are one.” Revelation 22:1 refers to, “Coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” Revelation 22:3 also says, “The throne of God and of the Lamb.” Christ and the Father are one and equally sovereign.

Resurrection of the ungodly

In John 5:28 it says, “Do not marvel at this, an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice and come forth, those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, and those who committed the evil deeds, to a resurrection of judgment.”

In Revelation 20:11-13 and 15, we see that the ungodly throughout all ages are being resurrected for the Great White Throne judgement. Jesus called it “the resurrection of damnation” or condemnation in John 5:29 while in Acts 24:15, Paul refers to it as “the resurrection of the wicked”. They will awake to shame and everlasting contempt and receive resurrection bodies, suited to suffer forever in hell.

No place to flee

In Revelation 20:11 John says that those from earth and the heaven fled away but no place was found for them. “ Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.” At the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom, Christ reformed the earth. Mountains were flattened out and islands fled away. This is earth being uncreated as we read in Matthew 24:35 where Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away.”

In 2 Peter 3:10-13 it says, “ But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”

It says the heavens will disappear and the elements will melt with intense heat. The earth and its works will be burned and totally consumed. In Isaiah 51:6 it says, “Lift up your eyes to the sky, then look to the earth beneath for the sky will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants will die in like manner.” Earth and heaven were once created by God and it will be also be uncreated by Him.

The judgement takes place in the absence of earth and heaven as we know it, as it have just been destroyed by God. The Great White Throne must appear in some timeless and space-less realm or presence.

The books are opened

Daniel saw the same scene of judgement as John, in his vision in Daniel 7, where the Ancient of Days is taking His seat on the throne and the books are being opened. Daniel 7:9-10 says “I watched till thrones were put in place, And the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, And the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, Its wheels a burning fire; A fiery stream issued And came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, And the books were opened.”

The book of life, is also mentioned in Revelation 3:5, Revelation 13:8, Revelation 17:8, Revelation 21:27 and Revelation 22:19.

Judgement according to the books

Revelation 20:12-13 says that they are judged according to their deeds and in Revelation 20:15 we read, “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

In Revelation 20:12 we read, “And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.” Luke 10:20 says, “Do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Daniel 12:1 also refers to, “Every one who is found written in the book.” In Malachi 3:16 it refers to the books in this way, “Those who feared the Lord spoke to one another when they heard about judgment and the Lord gave attention and heard it. And a book of remembrance was written before him for those who fear the Lord.”

It is clear from these verses that God’s records distinguish between the godly and the ungodly and if a person’s name is not in the Book of Life, he will be judged at the Great White Throne. Revelation 20:15 says, “And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” In Matthew 25:46 we read, “These will go away into eternal punishment, the righteous into eternal life.”

Romans 2:5 warns, “You are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgments of God who will render to every man according to his deeds.” God thus keeps a detailed record of every human being’s life.

In Romans 2:16 we see that we cannot hide anything from God. “On the day when according to my gospel God will judge the secrets of me through Christ Jesus.” Luke 8:17 says, “For nothing is hidden that shall not become evident, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light.” Romans 2:16 calls it “the day when God will judged the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.”

The deeds of the ungodly will be measured against God’s perfect standard and law. Because they did not receive Christ as their Saviour, they will be judged on every standard they did not meet. Hebrews 10:29 asks the question, “Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?” Romans 2:5 says, “By your stubborn and unrepentant heart you are piling up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath.” Every thought, word and deed will be judged. Therefore, everyone’s punishment will be consistent with his record, as God is a righteous judge.

A good example of the variation in the level of punishment is found in Mark 12:38-40. “ Then He said to them in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive GREATER CONDEMNATION.””

In Luke 12:47 Christ said, “And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.”

The just and righteous judgement of God

This judgement may sound unjust to the natural man as he does not realize how sinful he really is, but God’s final judgment is a very just and righteous judgment. Job 37 :23-24 says, “As for the Almighty, we cannot find Him; He is excellent in power, In judgment and abundant justice; He does not oppress. Therefore men fear Him; He shows no partiality to any who are wise of heart.”

God cannot be unjust as His holiness and perfection are the sources of His justice. He is just because it is His nature to be just. In modern day “Christianity,” they created for themselves a god who only blesses, who is not holy, who looks over their sin and leaves them to have “their best lives now.”

Acts 17:30-31 says, “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

Many of the lukewarm would be surprised as we see in Matthew 7:21-23. ““Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’”

A description of hell

Hell is the final destination of the ungodly after the White Throne judgement. It is often being referred to as the second death and is synonymous with the lake of fire. It is a “death” in that it is a separation from God, the Giver of life. It is called the “second” one because it follows physical death. In 2018 the false prophet, Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic “church,” even surprised the Catholics when he declared that there is no such thing as hell and that the ungodly would simply dissolve!

In Matthew 8:12, Matthew 22:13 and Matthew 25:30 hell is called a place of outer darkness. 2 Peter 2:17 and Jude 13 refers to it as the blackness of darkness. Both Isaiah 66:24 and Mark 9:48 say their worms will not die.

In Matthew 3:12 John the Baptist says when Christ comes He will burn up the ungodly with unquenchable fire.

Isaiah 66:24 says, “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Luke 13:28 mentions that there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 8, Matthew 22, Matthew 13, Matthew 25 and Matthew 24 are all referring to the weeping and the wailing.

It is no wonder Hebrews 10:31 says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

Good news to the redeemed

There is good news in 2 Peter 3:13 for the redeemed at the first resurrection, “Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” Isaiah 65:17 says, “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.”

The redeemed will not remember the past because our memories of the past would be tainted with sin. Hebrews 1:10-12 says, “You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail.”
